About Bournemouth
Bournemouth is located on the south coast of England in Dorset and is a popular tourist destination. It is about 105 miles southwest of London. To the west of Bournemouth there is Poole and to the east is Christchurch, from some vantage points you can often see the Isle of Wight. Bournemouth is popular with tourists due to its 7 mile beach, the wide range of accommodation and entertainment and the mild climate. In 1810 Lewis Tregonwell visited during a holiday at Mudeford to show the area to his wife, Henrietta. She allegedly fell in love with it and persuaded Lewis to buy land for a mansion, plus cottages for the use of staff and friends, to the west of the Bourne Stream. The Queen Mother's ancestor, Mary Eleanor Bowes, then the richest heiress in England, lived at Pokesdown in the 1790s to escape the clutches of her second husband. This set the tone for Bournemouth, which turned into a select retreat for the wealthy.

Bournemouth's growth accelerated with the arrival of the railway, becoming a recognised town in 1870. The gardens date back to at least the eighteenth century, when the Lord of the Manor enclosed a few acres of land as a hunting ground and built a lodge, Decoy House, which stood in what is now The Square.

Today Bournemouth is a vibrant and stimulating town providing holidays and relaxation on its 7 mile stretch of sandy beaches for many tens of thousands of people each year.
