Spain's Geography
Mainland Spain has an extremely varied geography and climate. The majority of the country is dominated by high plateaus and mountain ranges, with major rivers running through them. The Mediterranean bounds the south east of the country and the atlantic is to the east.

Spain is in the south west corner of Europe and is bordered by France and Andorra to the south east, Portugal to the west and Gibraltar and Morocco to the south. These coastal areas are a considerably cooler than the central area of the mainland, because the effects of the surrounding oceans.

Taking Pets to Spain
Spain is a member of the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), allowing cats and dogs to be taken from the UK to Spain and vice versa without quarantine. To qualify for this scheme pets and owners must met specific criteria, as no exceptions are made for any cat or dog.

Even though Spain takes part in PETS the scheme only covers certain routes into the country by ferry, rail or air. For specific details on the routes included in the scheme contact the UK and/or Spanish authorities.Cat and Dog Removals to Spain

To travel on the Pet Travel Scheme your cat or dog must:

  • Be fitted with an identity microchip, which can be read by any standard reader
  • Be fully vaccinated against Rabies and other conditions
  • Complete a blood test 30 days after vaccinations and be re-vaccinated if infected
  • Wait until at least 6 months after the blood test results before traveling abroad

In addition to meeting these criteria your cat or dog must also have the following documentation to enter Spain:

  • The PETS re-entry certificate, issued by a UK vet
  • Certificate of treatment, issued by vet before re-entering the UK
  • Declaration of residence, completed by yourself to confirm you pet hasn't been outside a qualifying country in the 6 months before re-entering the UK
  • Export Health Certificate, issued in the UK and is required for entry to Spain

As long as you and your pet meet all of the above criteria and have the relevant documentation you will both be able to leave and re-enter the UK with relatively little hassle. However, before leaving the UK we recommend to check all conditions and paperwork with your vet and government authorities.

Taking Cars to Spain
If you intend to spend more than 183 days in Spain and become a resident it is a legal requirement that any car you own must be registered in Spain. Whether you choose to import a car from the UK or buy one in Spain you must ensure it is fully registered, taxed and insured.

Car Removals to Spain

To prove you own a car in Spain you must have either a "residencia" or a valid "NIE/NIF" number, which can be obtained from the local council. If you do not complete this task quickly it can be extremely difficult to prove you own a car in Spain.

Finally, in terms of your license to drive a car in Spain you are able to continue using a UK driving license for the first 12 months of living in Spain. After which you must exchange your UK license for a Spanish one for a small administration fee.
