Why is Maidenhead such an idyllic location?
On the bank of the River Thames is the large market town of Maidenhead, located 31 miles west of London in the ceremonial county of Berkshire. The name Maidenhead stems from the riverside area where the first wharf was built in the Saxon times. Local landmark Maidenhead bridge dates from 1777 and was built at a cost of £19,000. Prior to his execution in 1649, Charles I met his children for the last time in the High Street, there is a plaque commemorating the meet. Just outside of the railway station is the clock tower, that was built for Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. It used money from public donations and construction commenced in 1897. It is approximately 14m tall and has four clock faces, each facing the four compass points. The history of Maidenhead started in the year 100AD when it was populated by Romans. Through aerial photography in the 1950s, a roman villa was discovered at Cox Green, just outside the town. In the northern outskirts of the town, there is a site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) called Cannoncourt Farm Pit, where the largest hand axe of the Palaeolithic era in Britain, was discovered. Maidenhead is twinned with Frascati in Lazio and Kortrijk in West Flanders. The links between the twinned towns is very strong, and they often compete in competitions and participate in student exchanges.
