Why is Newbury an idyllic location?
The market town of Newbury in West Berkshire is in the valley of the River Kennet, 27 miles south-east of Swindon, and 20 miles west of Reading. As well as being home to the famous Newbury Racecourse, it is the headquarters for Vodafone UK, and is home to such 15th century buildings as St Nicolas Church, which has perpendicular Gothic architectural style, and is usually large for a parish church. The town was founded in the late 11th century after the Norman conquest as a new borough, thus the name Newbury. The castle in the town was often visited by King John and Henry III when hunting in the area. During the English civil war, and both the First and Second Battles of Newbury, the Berkshire town was the primary site of conflict and many buildings in the town were reduced to ruin. On the 10th February 1943, two German bombers dropped eight bombs over the town, with no time for a warning siren. Over 260 buildings were destroyed, and many left standing had to be demolished. Newbury is twinned with Braunfels in Germany and Eeklo in Belgium.

Are you a big fan of the TV show Downton Abbey? How can you go to Newbury and not go the real-life grounds of the show at Highclere Castle? The castle is a country house in the Jacobethan style designed by architect Sir Charles Barry. During the Second World War, it was home to evacuees, whose names are etched into the roof lead. Military planes during the war crashed on the estate whilst on service. Today, the castle is home to the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, a direct descendent of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who was the financial baker in the excavation of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings.
However, if you aren’t one for history or TV, take a visit to the Living Rainforest, a centre which contains three glasshouses home to rare and endangered species, all with the look, sound and smells of a lush tropical rainforest, tricking your mind into thinking you are miles away from Berkshire. The sloths, armadillos and marmosets prove to be hits with the kids, and there are often themed events, depending on the time of year, such as Christmas craft fairs, Halloween tours and more.
The Watermill Theatre is a small performance venue set on the River Lambourn in Bagnor near Newbury, which houses fantastic productions and pantomimes, and seats just 220 people. They have produced award-winning work that has been recognised throughout the UK and abroad, and attracts audiences from far and wide. The selection of shows on offer is very wide, and there is always something for everybody. For a rural hamlet, it is remarkable to think that Sean Bean, Bill Nighy and David Suchet all started their extensive and successful careers in acting by performing at the theatre. Also, in the small West Berkshire hamlet is Bagnor Manor, a country home standing in the centre, which once belonged to Henry VIII. Bagnor is worth a visit, so you can admire its beauty and see some of the finest scenery West Berkshire has to offer.
