Normandy is one of the 18 main regions of France, and is divided into five administrative departments, covering roughly 5% of the territory of metropolitan France. The Channel Islands were historically part of the region, although they now are British Crown Dependencies. The name Normandy derives from the conquest and settlement of Vikings, also known as ‘Norsemen’. The first ruler of Normandy, Rollo, was a Viking, and his descendants and followers adopted the local Gallo-Romance language, calling themselves Normans. William, a direct descendant of Rollo, became King of England in 1066 after defeating Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon King, at the Battle of Hastings, whilst retaining the ownership of Normandy. In World War Two, the Allies co-ordinated an invasion of Normandy in the D-Day Landings on 6^th June 1944, under the code name Operation Overlord. The five beaches involved in the landings were Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword and Juno, and the events were considered a significant turning point in the war and led to the restoration of the French Republic. The main three cities in Normandy are Caen, Le Havre and Cherbourg, all of which are fishing and cross-channel ferry ports. The Norman language is spoken by a minority of the population, but some place names demonstrate the Norse influence.

Parts of the region consist of beautiful countryside, perfect for dairy cattle and apple orchards. The popular cheese Camembert is made and exported in Normandy, first made in the town of Camembert in 1791 by Marie Harel, a farmer who followed advice from a priest from Brie. The history of the region is of interest to tourists and visitors, who pay a trip to Normandy to see the World War Two sites, and Roman/Norman influenced buildings. The average temperature in Summer is 17.1 °c, with the average Winter temperature being 3.6 °c, both being lower than most other regions in France. However, the climate is warmer and drier than England, and it makes for a fantastic area for those looking to retire, relocate or buy a holiday home- as well as its distance from England, culture and history being strong selling points. Mont-Saint-Michel is an island and mainland commune in Normandy which is one of the most visited tourist destinations in France, and is a breath-taking experience for all who are from the region or are just visiting.
