Abbotts Ann – 6 Quirky Facts
- How Old?
Very. The earliest artefact to be discovered in Abbotts Ann is actually a mammoth’s tooth. The animals last roamed Britain 14,000 years ago. Other amazing finds in the village include a Roman villa near Dunkirt Lane. The floor was in excellent condition and is now on display at the British Museum. The first human settlement in the area is believed to have been 50BC when the Antrebates (early Celts) set about clearing and cultivating land. - How Much?
Abbotts Ann was listed in the Domesday Book and at the time consisted of 14 villagers, 12 smallholders and 4 slaves. There were 9 ploughlands, 2 lord’s plough teams (serving the lord of the manor), 7 men’s plough teams, 3 mills. The annual value was just £14. By 1870 the population had reached 640 and there were 140 houses. - Iron Plough
In 1806 Robert Tasker bought the local blacksmiths, working with his brother he created the first iron plough. Their creation was in such demand that they set up the Waterloo Iron Works and made ploughs to be used across the country. - All Welcome
Such was Tasker’s success that in 1831 he built Abbotts Ann School. 39 years before schools were compulsory for all children most schools were tied to churches, and children would be taught depending on their domination of Christianity. Abbotts Ann School was one of the very first to take children of all denominations. - Samuel Best
Not only did the Rev Samuel Best run Abbotts Ann’s new school, he discovered the remains of the Roman villa in 1854. His name can still be seen in the church today. - Witch Pots
In 1977 a local family digging out the floor of their cottage uncovered a number of ‘witch pots’ from under the hearth. As everyone knows, the easiest place for witches to enter your house is down the chimney (?!?) so witch pots would be filled with all kinds of things such as written curses, frogs legs, leaves and urine, to ward away the unwanted guests. Some witches pots had hideous faces (set to resemble Cardinale Bellarmine who was deeply unpopular) and would be pointed at the fireplace lest witches or hobgoblins drop by. The pots found under the floor of ‘Longthatch’ cottage tested positive for traces of urine and had clearly been buried with care as they were still intact.
