Northern Ireland certainly has a way with words. It has produced a huge number of excellent writers and poets including; Seamus Heaney, CS Lewis, Lucy Caldwell, Colin Bateman, Bob Shaw and Sinead Morrisey.
For a country of its size, Northern Ireland has also produced amazing sporting talent, including former world No1’s and world champions such as; Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, George Best, AP (Tony) McCoy, Pat Jennings, Dennis Taylor, Alex Higgins and Brendon Rogers.
It’s not just the competitors, NI has some amazing competitions including the highly technical and hotly contested Bog Snorkelling World Championships. And yes, competitors do wear fancy dress, like all true sports greats.
Other famous faces to hail from Northern Ireland include; Eamonn Holmes (presenter), Sir Kenneth Branagh, (actor/writer, director), Liam Neeson (actor), Van Morrison (singer), Jamie Dornan (actor), James Nesbit (actor) Amanda Burton (actor), Gloria Hunniford (presenter).
Most famously, Belfast was the birthplace of the Titanic. The ship was built in the city and 100,000 people gathered to get a glimpse of the ship as it set sail to Southampton. Advertised as being ‘unsinkable’, the ship went down on April 15, 1912 with the loss of over 1,500 lives. A number of the crew were from Northern Ireland.
When the Titanic was built, it was the largest moving object in the world. The anchor was so big it took 20 horses to move it along the quayside to be hoisted into position. And it certainly wasn’t cheap to build, allowing for inflation (based on 1997 rates) the ship would have cost £120,000,000 to make. The 1997 movie Titanic was even more expensive costing £200,000,000.
The Titanic Quarter is one of the most visited areas of the country. The former shipbuilding dockyard is now home to a large movie studio, bars, cafes and a museum dedicated to the famous ship and tragedy. The museum building is exactly the same height as the ship and the unusual design represents both the ship and the iceberg.
In 1888, while living and working in Belfast, John Dunlop (1840 – 1922) invented the pneumatic tyre, for use on bicycles. A truly wonderful invention that changed transport forever it was the foundation of the Dunlop tyre company and later sports brand. But Dunlop wasn’t the first to invent the tyre. Another Scotsman, Robert Thomson, had already filed a patent for rubber tyres designed for horse drawn carriages in 1847.
Northern Ireland is one of the most artistic areas of the UK, it has produced more than its fair share of writers, painters, actors and poets. It has a booming film industry and the landscape has become increasing popular as a filming location for shows such as Game of Thrones. It can also point to some pretty impressive sporting credentials, with the likes of George Best and Rory McIlroy among its sporting heroes. The landscape is diverse yet small enough that you can see it all in a day, from rural bothies, to coastal cottages and on to funky city apartments, if you’re moving to Northern Ireland you’ll find a location which recognises the past and is keen to embrace the future.
