Oxford – 7 Quirky Facts
- That’s Capital!
King Charles I made Oxford his new capital city in January 1642. Charles had been virtually run out of London by Parliamentarians who were seeking to reduce the power of the King. Fearing his opponents Charles decamped and made Oxford his new capital, setting up the royal mint there and basing his army in the city. As a result, the county became a focal point of battles throughout the Civil War that lasted for 9 years. - Mein Camp
Hitler also had designs on Oxford and intended to make it his capital city once he won WWII. He was so keen on the plan that he ordered his planes to avoid bombing it, which spared many of the city’s historic buildings. - Writers Wot Right Stuf
It’s produced some of the nation’s brightest minds and produced more authors per mile than anywhere else in the world. In 1209 a number of riots broke out between students and locals. They became known as the ‘Town vs Gown Riots’ and there were injuries and even deaths on both sides. Fearing for their lives, one group of students fled the town and set up a new university in a place called Cambridge. Yep, Cambridge University owes its existence to Oxford. Not something that Oxford dons hold over their Cambridge counterparts ever. But before the students of Oxford get too carried away, we shouldn’t forget the name Oxford means ‘cattle crossing’, so no need to get ‘snobbish’! - Oxford Snobs
Through its many writers and student slang, Oxford has gifted the world many words (all recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary of course). One such word to come from the uni is ‘snob’. The first university college opened its doors in 1096, it was the first English-speaking university in the world. For the first 700 years, the only subject you could study there was religion. One of the UK’s premier cities, it’s famed for its universities, but it offers so much more besides. Foodies will find a hive of independent cafes, restaurants and food shops. There are weekly markets and some diverse street food. Shopaholics will also find plenty to peruse, unique stores, ethical shops and locally owned and run emporiums. There are good transport links, a busy social calendar, live entertainment venues, good schools and plenty of green spaces.
Leisure
There are several golf courses in the area, gyms, leisure centres, swimming pools, and several theatres. Eating out is a joy with a large selection of restaurants and cafes to sink your teeth into. If you want to get out and about there are a number of great parks and green spaces plus the university city has a very well planned and maintained cycle path network.
Transport
The A40 and A34 form a ring road network on the outskirts of the city that add to what is a very good transport hub. Buses serve the local area and cross the city. Anyone commuting to London can be in the capital in less than an hour or Birmingham in 1 hour 2 minutes. And when you do need to escape, Oxford International Airport is the closest quick getaway.
