Woking – 6 Quirky Facts
- War of the Wells
HG Wells moved to Woking with his family in 1895 and it was while living in the town that he wrote War of the Worlds, published in 1898. He used Woking as the setting of the alien invasion. Clearly the aliens weren’t impressed and destroyed the town (or perhaps Wells was just venting his council tax fury?). In 1998, to celebrate the book’s centenary, a statue of one of the aliens was unveiled in the town centre by Carol Vordeman. - Woking’s Famous Faces
Famous people to have lived in the town include; Delia Smith (TV chef), Sean Walsh (comedian), James Cracknell (Olympic rower), Sir Patrick Moore (astronomer), Kazuo Ishiguro (novelist), Harry Hill (comedian), Susie Dent (Countdown), Rick Parfitt (Status Quo) and Lady Emma Hamilton (Horatio Nelson’s infamous lover). - A Town Called… Woking
The Jam had a string of hits including the iconic “A Town Called Malice”. The band members grew up and formed the band in Woking. Paul Weller used to hold open jam sessions and anyone who turned up was in the band that day. Eventually the three main protagonists started gigging and the name stuck. In later years they dispelled the myth that Woking was the town called ‘Malice’, “It could be anywhere. I think it’d be unfair to say it was just about Woking.” said Rick Buckler, the band’s drummer. - Spice Girls
Another famous band to have learnt their trade in Woking was the Spice Girls. Having been put together, the girl group rehearsed in Woking’s Youth Arts Centre before going on to find global fame (that’s what they really, really want!). - First Mosque

About Woking
The Spice Girls, The War of World’s, Paul Weller, they’ve all helped put Woking on the map. An inclusive and welcoming city, it is home to the UK’s first mosque (opened in 1889) and also was where the Martians landed in HG Wells iconic masterpiece. The town’s first recorded appearance is in the Domesday Book, 1089. Today it is a modern town with a vibrant shopping centre with all the high street names you’d expect.
Leisure
There is a multi-plex cinema and one of the largest theatres outside of London. The New Victoria Theatre seats 1,300 people and regularly features No1 touring productions. There is a good selection of independent cafes and restaurants and also pubs and bars.
You can keep the calories off at Woking’s leisure centre with a swimming pool (swimming lanes and family pool), gym, cycle studio, squash, badminton and even table tennis. There are also classes and private instructors to help you hit your goals. Woking is also surrounded by greenbelt land and in almost every direction you’ll find places to walk, jog, cycle and explore.
Transport
Woking is perfectly equidistant between the M3 and A3, both of which provide routes into the centre of London. Trains to Waterloo take 24 minutes. The nearest airport is Heathrow, just over 11 miles away.
