Worthing avoids all the noise and bustle of Brighton but is one of the South Coast’s most treasured gems. This little town punches well above its weight and it’s no wonder the likes of Oscar Wilde, Jane Austin and Harold Pinter have all found inspiration here.
Dating back over 6,000 years the town has celebrated its artistry and seafaring routes for centuries. It was once a simple mackerel fishing Hamlet until visiting the seaside became fashionable in the 1800s. Since then it has become a thriving town, with plenty of excellent cafes, restaurants, parks and the beautiful seafront.
With a rich Stone Age and Saxon heritage there is much to explore here for any budding historians. The Cissbury Ring is one of Britain’s largest Iron Age hill forts. Roman settlements, Stone Age flint mines. Georgian architecture and the South Downs National Park are all worth exploring.
Other attractions include a cinema, theatre, local theatre groups, festivals and of course Worthing Pier.
By train commuters can be in London Victoria in 1 hour and 22 minutes. Travelling by car the A24 runs North to the M25. East to West the A27 reaches from Southampton (M27) to Eastbourne taking in Brighton, Chichester, Lewes and Portsmouth. There is also a small local airport at nearby Shoreham which hosts an annual air show.
