How to move home in the rain

How to move home in the rain

We would consider ourselves optimistic people here at Armishaws Removals, however we all know that the British weather is often unpredictable and there is a very good chance that you may end up moving house in the rain no matter what the season!

As much as we wish everyone had the luck of a dry and sunny moving day, you also need to be realistic and think about what will happen if you’re faced with dark, miserable weather. As we don’t always have a choice in how the weather plays out and moves are planned weeks in advance, the best thing that you can do is be prepared as much as possible.

At the end of the day, a little bit of rain never hurt anyone.

So, how do you prepare for a rainy day house move?

We have a few tips we’ve picked up over the years to help with your rainy UK removals.

Pack your belongings well

No matter what the weather you need to be prepared and prepared means making sure your belongings are packed and ready for moving day. Start at least a couple of weeks in advance leaving the items you use regularly until last. No matter what you have in a box, never leave your boxes open!

If you’re not planning on using a professional packing service, here are some useful tips to make sure your belongings are prepared for all kinds of weather.

  • Don’t leave gaps in your boxes. Fill any space in your boxes with other items such as spare clothes or even crumpled paper.
  • Wrap your furniture in soft blankets and secure in place with plenty of tape. For further protection from the rain add a layer of stretch wrap.
  • The heavier an item is, the smaller the box you need. The last thing that you want to do is fill boxes so much that they cannot be lifted.
  • Make sure that you keep all important documents safe and with you at all times. Keep the most important documents in plastic wallets in case they come in contact with the rain.

Check the weather forecast

Knowing what to expect can be half the preparation. Checking the forecast repeatedly isn’t going to change the forecast but make sure that you keep an eye on it regularly as it may help with the final preparations before your move. Don’t trust just the one forecast though, make sure to check a few so that you are prepared for all eventualities and may be able to plan a little around the heaviest wet periods.

Avoid plastic sheeting

It may seem like a good idea to protect your carpets, but plastic sheeting on a wet day can be disastrous.  The last thing you need is to slip up whilst carrying a heavy box and do yourself some damage. Protect yourself and your removals team from slipping up and use large dust sheets or old bed sheets to lay down on the floor. If you don’t have large sheets available there will be plenty of cardboard around so you can use this to create a pathway around the house.

Regardless of how hard you try, when moving in the rain things will get dirty. Make sure that you have your cleaning products close by to clean up those stray muddy footprints.

Dress for the occasion

This won’t be your first encounter with the rain, you know what keeps you dry so make sure you have the right clothing to hand that will protect you in the rain. Dress in suitable clothes that you will be comfortable in no matter how soaked through you get. You may also want to consider keeping a change of clothes handy if the weather is truly against you.

Do not rush

Whether you’re using a professional removals company or moving yourself, the rain will inevitably slow things down. Try and stay calm and expect that there may be some delays. Most accidents occur when you try and hurry, things will get broken or dropped in a puddle and although you will want to just get the job done, it will pay off to take things at a more sensible pace.

Don’t forget this on the roads too. Make sure that you drive cautiously and consider the state of the driving conditions. The last thing you need is a small bump that will eat into precious moving time.

Regardless of whether you use a trusted removals company or plan to make your move yourself, the best thing is to be prepared!
