Broad Chalke – 5 Quirky Facts

    1. It’s a Mystery!
Why have so many celebrities been attracted to this one little village in rural Wiltshire? In the words of 80’s punk star and former Broad Chalke resident Toyah Wilcox, “It’s a mystery!”.
    2. Aren’t you..?!?
But Toyah certainly isn’t the only famous face to be seen in the village. Other ‘slebs’ include, Robert Fripp, guitarist with rock band King Crimson, Sir Anthony Eden the former British Prime Minister retired to the Broad Chalke, the famous painter Christopher Wood was buried in the churchyard, Ursula von Pannwitz the former Countess of Chichester, author and broadcaster James Holland, the much loved father of Discworld and fantasy novelist Sir Terry Pratchett and Sir Cecil Beaton the fashion/war/portrait photographer, diarist, painter and Oscar award winning designer.
    3. What Goes Up, Gurston Down
On June the 25th 1967, a McLaren-Oldsmobile driven by Patsy Burt set a time of 39.90 seconds for a hill climb up the tricky Gurston Down, a course set on farmland. Since then, the event has grown, with two qualifying events in May and August, the course also hosts motorcycle race climbs and the winding, private road is perfectly suited for gravity racing (downhill events where no motor is used).
    4. How Do You Spell It?
There still seems to be some confusion over the spelling of the village’s name. Through the centuries it has appeared on maps and in records as Broadchalk, Broad Chalk, Cealcan Gemere, Chelce, Chelke, Cheolca, Chelk Feet of Fines, Broadcholk, Broad Chalk, Brode Chalk… Even as late as the 20th century, the Electoral Register and Ordinance Survey Map both used different spellings.
    5. Man vs Bank
Have you’ve ever dreamed of being the guy that takes on the big boys… and wins? Well, Broad Chalke has such a hero. In 1974 local farmer Herbert Bundy took on Lloyds Bank in the case, Bundy vs Lloyds. Bundy’s son’s company suffered hardships and Bundy had used his farmhouse as an asset to help tied over his son’s debt. The bank “hadn’t fully disclosed the full financial problems” of his son’s company and therefore knowingly putting both father and son in further financial difficulties. The presiding judge ruled in Mr Bundy’s favour and also raised the issue of an “inequality of bargaining power” with such a big financial corporation taking a hold over the homeowner. Victory for the little guy!
