Buckingham Facts – Did you know…

Early Buck
The first traces of life in Buckingham dates back to the Roman era. In the 1960s building work uncovered evidence of a Roman temple built around the 3rd century.
Bucca & Alfred
The town gets its name from a 7th century Saxon leader who settled in the area. Between the 7th and 10th centuries the town switched hands between the kingdoms of Mercia, Wessex and the Vikings. Alfred the Great realised how important it was and built a fortified town.
Buckingham Saved England
The town is mentioned in the ancient Saxon text, the Burghal Hidage. It was from here that King Edward and his army eventually pushed the Vikings out of Bedford, Cambridge, Northampton and East Anglia.
By Royal Approval
Other royals to have visited Buckingham include Catherine of Aragon and Elizabeth I. Both and Charles I and Oliver Cromwell camped in the town during the Civil War. King Charles even drew up battle plans at Castle House. The town changed hands several times during the conflict.
Size Matters
At the time of the Domesday Book, the growing settlement had 26 free men, 11 small holders and a mill.
Great Fire
On the 15th of March, 1725 a fire devastated the town, 138 of the town’s 387 homes were lost to the blaze.
Letting Off Steam
In 1860 local inventor and businessman John Ricket created a steam car. Perhaps too far ahead of his time, Rickett only managed to sell two cars.
