    Buckingham – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Early Buckingham
The first traces of life in Buckingham dates back to the Roman era. In the 1960s building work uncovered evidence of a Roman temple circa 3AD.
    2. Bucca & Alfred
The town gets its name from a 7th century Saxon leader who settled in the area with his followers. Between the 7th and 10th centuries the town regularly switched hands between the Saxons, Wessex and the Danes who controlled most of northern England (known as Danelaw). It was Alfred the Great who realised how important the town was and it became one of a number of heavily defended forts to protect Wessex from Viking attacks.
    3. Buckingham Saved England
We might be pushing the point slightly but it was definitely pivotal in the later stages of the Viking conquest. The town is mentioned in the ancient Saxon text, the Burghal Hidage, and it was from Buckingham that King Edward and his army eventually pushed the Vikings out of Bedford, Cambridge, Northampton and East Anglia. Yay Buckingham!
    4. By Royal Approval
Other royals to have visited Buckingham include Catherine of Aragon, Elizabeth I and both Oliver Cromwell and Charles I camped in the town during the Civil War. King Charles even drew up battle plans at Castle House. The town changed hands several times during the conflict but was never fully besieged sparing the townsfolk from more suffering.
    5. Size Matters
So just how big was Buckingham? Well, at the time of the Domesday Book, Buckingham had 26 free men, 11 small holding and a mill. By 1725 the town had 387 homes, but on the 15th of March a fire devastated the town and 138 of the homes were lost to the blaze.
    6. Letting Off Steam
John Ricket was a Buckingham-based inventor and businessman, his greatest creation was the steam car in 1860. Well ahead of his time, sadly Rickett only managed to sell two cars.
