    Chippenham – 7 Quirky Facts

    1. Not So Great
Alfred the Great and his forces were attacked by the Vikings at Chippenham, that battle went so badly that Alfred was forced to flee to the Somerset Marshes where he was forced to camp for a year before the Battle of Edington turned the tide of English history. Alfred later accepted the Vikings surrender at Chippenham.
    2. Oops! Buttercross
The impressive stone structure that stands in the centre of the town was once bought by a wealthy land owner who took it away and used it as a gazebo where it fell into disrepair. It was later saved and returned to the town by Chippenham Civic Society.
    3. Royal Wedding
Alfred the Great liked it so much it was used as the site to marry his sister Aetheslwith to King Burgred of Mercia.
    4. Summertime Blues
One of the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll Eddie Cochran, sadly died when a car he was travelling in crashed here on route to London. Gene Vincent was a passenger but survived the accident.
    5. L.A. Cock
The nearby village of Lacock has featured in a number of major TV shows and movies including Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, Wolf Hall , Pride & Prejudice, Fantastic Beasts; The Crimes of Grindewald.
    6. Castle Combe
Another award winning, picturesque nearby village is Castle Combe, it has a famous racetrack, and also found fame in the 1967 musical Dr Doolittle and more recently in the Stephen Spielberg blockbuster, Warhorse.
    7. Charming
There are some charmingly named villages in the area, without doubt our favourite has to be the small hamlet between here and Castle Combe named ‘Tiddleywink’.
