Datchet Facts – Did you know..?

    1. Down By The Riverside
Datchet was a ferry crossing on the River Thames, in particular for royals travelling between Windsor Castle and London. In 1249 Henry III ordered a giant oak tree be felled from Great Windsor Forest to make a new royal barge to cross in.
    2. Datchet At War
During WWII, the War Department’s Radio Research Station was based at Ditton Park. Originally demonstrated in 1935 by Datchet resident Watson Watt, Radar was dismissed by government bureaucrats. His invention was eventually described as ‘the most decisive weapon of the war’.
    3. Me & Mrs Simpson
The Pavilion Club on the riverside was a popular venue for London’s elite who’d watch stars such as Dame Vera Lynn. Edward VIII and Mrs Wallace Simpson met there in secret before he gave up the throne to be with the woman he loved.
    4. Name Game
Datchet is one of the few English place names derived from its Celtic roots. Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon, artefacts including weapons and jewellery have all been recovered from this stretch of the Thames.
    5. Who You Gonna Call?
Despite cleaning and even replacing the glass, one window of The Royal Stag has a ghostly reoccurring child’s handprint. Local legend says, the mark appeared after a father went in for a drink while leaving his child outside, who perished in a snowstorm.
    6. Bad To The Bone
In the 1800s the town was home to so many ‘braggards and scoundrels’ that Aylesbury County Jail had what the jailors called the ‘Datchet Wing’ housing the numerous drunks, petty villains and poachers.
