    Fun Dorset Facts

    1. Jurassic Park
Dorset’s Jurassic coast was the first location in the world to feature on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It’s of particular historical interest because of the rich vein of dinosaur and prehistoric remains to have appeared along the coastline. It’s also spectacularly beautiful and well worth a visit.
    2. UFO
The first recorded UFO sighting in the UK occurred in Fleet, Dorset in 1733. The term ‘UFO’ didn’t come into common use until 200 years later.
    3. Art Attack
Legend has it that the ancient hillfort of Bradbury Rings was the site of a fierce battle in which King Arthur killed 160 Saxon warriors.
    4. Old & Bendy
The county has some lovely claims, it’s home to the UK’s oldest post box which was erected in 1853, has seen 5 monarchs and bears the initials of Queen Victoria. Dorset is home to Britain’s bendiest road, the B3081 that is known locally as ‘Zig Zag Hill’. It was also the birthplace of the Boy Scout movement.
    5. Slow Motion
Dorset doesn’t have a motorway. On the whole driving is slower in Dorset but when the views are so good, what’s the hurry?!?
    6. Red Hot Chilli Peppers
The Dorset Naga is one of the hottest chillies in the world scoring on the 923,000 Scoville scale. That’s 400 times fiercer than Tabasco Sauce , it’s so hot you have to wear gloves just to handle it and must have a fire extinguisher on hand before eating one (ok, we made that last bit up, but you do need gloves, don’t say we didn’t warn you!)
    7. She sells sea shells…
Mary Anning was a palaeontologist and fossil lover who discovered a number of dinosaur remains and previously unknown species. She used to clean, polish and sell smaller finds and fossils to tourists and was the subject of the popular tongue twister. All day long she sits and shines… However, she was not allowed to join the Geological Society because she was a woman.
    8. Fit For A Palace
St Pauls Cathedral and Buckingham Palace are both made with Dorset stone. With Armishaws Dorset removals you won’t need to go to those lengths to impress the neighbours.

    About Dorset

One of the UK’s most scenic counties, Dorset has so much to offer both inland and along its historic coastline. The Jurassic Coast is a UNESCO World Heritage site, ideal for artists, photographers and nature lovers to explore. Sandy beaches, hidden coves and smugglers tales all add to the romance of the county.

Some consider Dorset to enjoy a slightly slower pace of life (it’s true there are no motorways in Dorset) but there is still much to discover, beautiful, unspoilt villages, rustic country pubs, incredible scenery, artisan food producers, local crafts and vibrant cities are all part of the make up that attract so many people.

    Population – 745,841 (2011 You.Gov census)

    Area – 2,653 km²

Schools – See the latest Ofsted reports and scores for Dorset schools – See Reports.

    Things to Do in Dorset

    Cerne Abbas Giant

This most handsomely endowed fellow is most well-known for his 11-metre phallus. It’s rumoured to aid fertility for couples ‘doing what comes naturally’ on the site under a full moon.

    Durdle Door

Dorset’s most iconic landmark, this stunning structure can be viewed from the beach, from the cliff tops or by boat. It’s best to visit at first light to beat the crowds and get the best photos.

    Game On

Dorset is home to the World Nettle Eating Contest and the World Knob Throwing competition. So, if you’re feeling sporty you could become a world champ in sunny Dorset.

    Tyneham Village Dorset

    Ghost Village

In 1943 Tyneham Village was cleared when the area became a firing range during WWII. The uninhabited village still stands complete with pub, post office, school and homes.

    Museums & Historic Sites

You can explore Dorset’s rich history and see it come to life at the county’s best museums.

    County News

    The best sources for county news can be found online at;

An area of world-renowned scientific interest and incredible natural beauty, Dorset really is a little bit special. The beautiful coastline attracts thousands of visitors, there are the tourists but also fantastic birdlife and sea life.  Whether you enjoy birding, fossil hunting or just want to get out and enjoy the great outdoors there are miles and miles of coast to explore.

You’ll also find rich history (no, not just the sharp-toothed scaly variety). Smugglers tales and legends run through the county which also produced some of Britain’s most feared pirates. Artists have also been inspired by Dorset, Enid Blyton created the Famous Five here, basing their adventures on the beaches and woodland found in the county.

While your Dorset removals don’t have to break the bank there are plenty of eye-watering prices with Sandbanks being one of the most expensive property hotspots in the world, and even beach huts in the area can set you back a pretty penny with some of the traditional wooden huts exchanging hands for six figure sums.
