If you are moving house, looking to start a new life in Mosterton or retiring to Mosterton, we can help you.
Not to be confused with Misterton, a couple of miles away over the Somerset border, Dorset’s Mosterton has seen its population fluctuate over the centuries.
There were just over 400 residents in 1841, but by 1901 that had halved.
Now, with lots of new building in the intervening years, there are over 600 people here, in this pretty working village, with more set to arrive as more homes are built – at least 40 more are thought to be in the pipeline.
Mosterton is one of the most expensive rural areas, where homes average more than 12 times local workers’ annual salaries. However it recently benefited from a development of new homes, many of which are ‘affordable’ shared ownership.
Mosterton sits about three miles from its post town Beaminster and only a little further from Crewkerne in Somerset, where you can find shops and secondary schools. A little further away you have Yeovil and Bridport.
However there’s no need to travel far for your essentials. The village does offer a Spar shop and pub and a ‘Good’ rated primary school.
Parrett and Axe Primary School is named after the two rivers of the village and forms part of the Beaminster cluster of schools.
Mosterton also boasts one of the busiest and most active Scout groups in the county, bringing youngsters from all over the area to enjoy a full programme of activities.
The Admiral Hood pub is named after Admiral Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood (1724-1816). The pub, originally the New Inn, was gutted by fire in 1955 and was rebuilt in its original style. It was renamed in honour of the Hood family, who had occupied a Georgian house originally on the site, whose name had been used on many battleships.
The village is also known for Eeles Pottery, which was started in an old 17th century coaching inn in 1962 by artist David Eeles and his wife Patricia.
Their son Benjamin joined the family business and is now carrying on his father’s legacy, producing an extensive range of pottery, mainly stoneware with some porcelain and raku. The raku is fired to 1,000 degrees in a small cross draft wood fired kiln, lifted out with tongs and then flamed on sawdust. This gives the rainbow colours on the pots. See more here.
