    Removals Sherborne

A fast-growing town which retains its charm

It is a rare town that remains quaint, despite having doubled its population over the last 40 years.

But Sherborne still feels – and is – a genteel place with a warm heart.

Hundreds of homes have been recently added at Barton Farm on its outskirts, with affordable homes sprinkled in, and more are being built.

You can see why it is so popular: Despite being sleepy, with a large retirement community, Sherborne is within a pretty straightforward commute from London. You can get to the capital in two-and-a-half hours by train or by road.

Yet, once home, the commuter could be a lifetime away from the Big Smoke.

The ancient market town of Sherborne is famous for its historic buildings including its Abbey Church, the renowned Sherborne Boys’ School and two castles. The Abbey and many of the medieval and Georgian buildings are built from warming yellow hamstone.

Nearly a third of its population of 12,000 are aged over 65, yet they are forward-thinking folk. There is a strong green movement here, with various environmental and sustainability organisations. The Quarr Local Nature Reserve at the northern end of the town makes use of an old quarry and landfill site, Sherborne Area Partnership oversees a successful environment forum and, in 2009, Sherborne became an official Transition Town, running a number of projects and events as a community response to climate change and peak oil.

After all, there’s a lot to protect in Sherborne. It sits on the River Yeo on the edge of the beautiful Blackmore Vale. It is stuffed to the gills with historic buildings, including a manor house, independent schools, and two castles – the ruins of a 12th century fortified palace and the 16th century mansion built by Sir Walter Raleigh known as Sherborne Castle.

Sherborne Castle plays host to a wide variety of events throughout the year, from large country fairs to classic car rallies to jousting tournaments.

The town has held the Pack Monday Fair for centuries in October. Once an agricultural fair, it now features stalls, sideshows and a funfair.

Sherborne Boys’ School, originally King Edward’s School, has been built on the remains of the abbey buildings and was founded in 1550. It is one of the great public schools of England and still uses the monastic buildings attached to the Abbey.

There are examples of 17th, 18th and 19th century architecture in unspoilt streets around Sherborne. Medieval buildings are legion and include The Almshouse of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist, the 15th century Conduit House and The Julian, an early 16th century house which was originally the hospice of St Julian of Norwich.

In the town centre art and antique dealers are peppered among small independents and high street chains.

All in all, if you are looking to live in a quintessentially English rural market town but be central enough to visit the cities with ease, Sherborne could tick all the boxes.
