    Esher – 5 Quirky Facts

    1. Meet The Neighbours
The town has had some notable residents including; Gary Lineker (presenter, former England footballer), Mick Hucknall (singer), Chris Tarrant (TV presenter), Frank Lampard (footballer), Clive of India (military commander), Lily James (actor), Maurice Gibb (Bee Gee, musician), Queen Victoria (queen) and George Harrison (Beatle).
    2. The Big House
Claremont House has had some pretty auspicious residents. The original house was built by Sir John Vanbrugh and later became the property of Clive of India. He knocked the old gaff down and had a new, palatial property built with gardens designed by Capability Brown. Prince Leopold and Princess Charlotte of Belgium lived there for a time, King Louis Philippe spent his last two years there after being exiled from France and Queen Victoria enjoyed much of her childhood at Claremont.
    3. The Priory
Esher had a priory which was established by Augustinian monks around the 12th century. They provided care for the sick and poor which became their undoing when the monks were all killed during the Black Death of 1349. Having been re-established, the monastery ran into financial difficulties in 1436 when the rather corrupt clergy spent much of the priory’s funds enjoying the good life and it was forced to close.
    4. All Doomed
According to the Domesday book of 1086. Esher had a population consisting of 25 villagers, 6 cottagers and the land had notable residents and owners including Bishop Odo, William of Vatteville and Odard the Bowman.
    5. It’s Murder!
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based one of Sherlock Holmes’ mysteries in Esher when Mr Garcia was murdered in The Adventure of Wisteria Lodge. In the novel Dr Watson describes, “It was nearly six o’clock before we found ourselves in the pretty Surrey village of Esher, with Inspector Baynes as our companion”. Esher was also at the centre of another murderous scandal in 1854 when a former wetnurse to the then Prince of Wales killed 6 of her 7 children. Somewhat ghoulishly her former house became a tourist attraction bringing hundreds of visitors from London to see where she had lived.
