Why is Essex an idyllic location?
Essex is a county in the South-East of England, located North-East of London, which has 14 different districts and just one city. The name ‘Essex’ originated in the Anglo-Saxon period of the Early Middle Ages and was originally located north of the River Thames, which later became Hertfordshire. The highest point of the county is Chrishall Common, which reaches 482 feet, and during the medieval period, much of the area was designated a Royal forest. It is twinned with Jiangsu, China and Henrico County, Virginia, United States. Essex is home to Britain’s oldest recorded town, Colchester. Southend Pier is 1.33 miles long, and is the longest pleasure pier in the world, making it one of Essex’s biggest attractions. The county has 35 islands in total, more than any other county in the country. Its coastline, and short distance to London, make it a great location to live, whether it be for work, or retirement.
The county has plenty of things to do, and will always aim to entertain with an extensive selection of different activities, centres of interest, and attractions, on offer. Colchester Zoo is a popular day out for those visiting the area, with 60 acres of land housing over 250 species of animals. Near to the zoo is Colchester Castle, a stately, 11th century edifice, complete with a jail and interactive exhibit.
A visit to the pier in Clacton on Sea is a must, as it offers arcades, eateries, bowling, aquarium, funfair and fantastic views. It would be an opportunity missed not to try some jam on the tour of renowned jam makers Wilkin & Sons Ltd who are based in the county.
There are also a few professional football teams in Essex, so catching an intense game would be an exciting day out, and a great chance to mix with the locals. There are also live music and theatre events that occur regularly.
By car, the M11 and M25 run through Essex, making access into the county very easy, especially from London.
By train, you can get to Essex from most main London stations, or from most major South-East stations. It is advised to look at your route prior to journey to plan and view the most convenient stops.
By bus, there are regular services that run through the county from lots of different locations. Access to larger towns in the area, from smaller villages, is achievable through public transport.
By air, you can fly to Essex thanks to the airport which has recently opened in Southend.
In Essex, there are a wide range of schools and nurseries in all the towns and villages in the county. Essex itself is 3,670 km² in size, and there are over 100 schools across the county, so regardless of where you are looking to move to, you are likely to be within one school’s catchment, but the more populated the location, the greater the choice of schools (usually). Essex has a high-standard of schooling, with lots of the schools achieving good results in GCSEs and A-Levels. There are plenty to choose from when looking to find one that suit your child/children and their needs.
