    Fleet – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Fore!
This is golfing country, there are a number of excellent courses in the area, and Fleet is home to former world no1 Justin Rose.
    2. Simply the Best
The area (Hart, of which Fleet is the main town) has been voted the best place to live in the UK by the Halifax Quality of Life study, 6 times! Yes, ‘six’. Take that Brighton!
    3. Acting Up
Racquel Cassidy (Downton Abbey, Land Girls) and Juliet Aubrey (Silent Witness, Primeval, Midsomer Murders) are both from Fleet.
    4. What’s In A Name?
The name ‘Fleet’ is thought to derive from the French “La flete”, a small body of water, which probably refers to Fleet Pond.
    5. Bad Lands
The land was originally mostly bog, bracken and land not suitable for agriculture, but possibly providing plenty of places to hide for the many vagabonds and highwaymen (and women!) that preyed on wealthy stagecoaches heading in and out of London.
    6. Gurkha Square
Gurkha Square was named in honour of the Gurkha Regiment who were based in Fleet for many years.
