Why is Cheltenham an idyllic location?

The borough of Cheltenham sits on the edge of the Cotswolds and has been classified as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Since the discovery of mineral springs in 1716, Cheltenham has been a health spa town, and attracts visitors from all over the world. The town hosts several festivals of culture, drawing in nationally famous attendees, to events such as the Jazz festival, Music festival and Food and Drink Festival. The gold cup of the Cheltenham Horseracing festival is held every March. The River Chelt runs through the town, from which it takes its name. It was awarded a market charter in 1226, a big achievement for that period, helping mark Cheltenham on the map. Horse racing began in the area in 1815, with the festival bringing in large numbers of visitors. The first British jet aircraft prototype was manufactured in the town, and the head office of the HQ of British Government Communications is located in Cheltenham. The spring in Cheltenham was first discovered by pigeons, that gathered in a field that turned out to be a spring. The town’s crest is now a pigeon, commemorating this bizarre but fascinating discovery. Edwin Beard Budding from nearby Stroud invented the very first lawnmower, and Henry Skillicorne from Cheltenham is considered the first entrepreneur to recognise the opportunity to exploit mineral springs.
