If you are moving house, looking to start a new life in Broughton or retiring to Broughton, we can help you.
The skeleton of a Saxon warrior discovered in Broughton by a ploughman in 1875 may have been the first indication the settlement had been there a while.
Many old-world traditions remain in the village, which lies ten miles east of Salisbury.
Newcomers beware – there used to be a tradition of dumping a man on your doorstep when you moved in – and leaving him there till you fed and watered him!
But we think that’s died out… probably…
Broughton Village History
The village’s history appears to be even longer than most of the Domesday Book wannabes – with a piece of lead from AD59 discovered there in 1783.
Henry V’s soldiers camped near Bossington on their way to the battle of Agincourt, it is claimed. But the little hamlet on the edge of Broughton was destroyed in 1829 by Mr Penleasze, the owner of Bossington House. Quite why, no one knows. Maybe he disliked having neighbours.
A previous owner of Bossington House appears to have been a little more constructive. Thomas South invented the practice of covering a hot air balloon with a net, in order to attach a basket. He also conducted experiments in the river Test, inventing appliances for bringing sunken vessels to the surface and keeping damaged vessels afloat.
The lord of the manor gained a charter for an annual fair in the 13th century. However in the 1800s the fair had become ‘a nasty mixture of beer and gingerbread’ and scrapped. The fair was re-established in recent times, with plenty of beer and gingerbread, and a procession from the village hall.
