The town of Farnborough, located north east in Hampshire, close to the border with Surrey, is in the district of Rushmoor, 34 miles from London and just 16 miles from Basingstoke. Farnborough’s suburban areas include West Heath, Southwood, North Camp, Fox Lane, St John’s, and many others. The River Blackwater marks the county boundary, and the only naturally occurring significant flowing water is from Cove Brook- near the town’s airport. Farnborough is close to junctions 4 and 4a of the M3 motorway, and the A325 enters the town from the north and continues through to Aldershot in the south. Farnborough is served by three railway stations, which connect through to London, Portsmouth, Brockenhurst, Basingstoke and many other major UK locations. The town is twinned with Meudon in France, Oberusel in Germany and Sulechów in Poland. The town is very big on sport, with multiple football, rugby, cricket, hockey, motorsports and basketball teams playing in Farnborough. There is one main shopping centre which divides into three different areas. There are also three different supermarkets, a retail park and independent retailers. French emperor Napoleon III, his wife Empress Eugenie and son Louis Napoleon are entombed in the crypt at Saint Michael’s abbey in the town. The area has a postcode of GU14, with a dialling code of 01252 and 01276. The name of the town comes from ‘Ferneberga’ which means “fern hill”.
The town has been closely associated with the Aviation history since the first powered flight at Farnborough Airport by Samuel Cody in 1907. Even today Farnborough has a close link with Aviation with a busy airport catering for over 28 thousand flights per year and it presents the international Air Show every two years. The air accidents investigation branch and BAE are both based on the airport.
There are currently seventeen different primary schools in Farnborough, including infant and catholic schools, in addition to three state secondary schools- Cove School, Fernhill School and the Wavell School. The town is also home to the Sixth Form College of Farnborough. Whilst there are no Universities in Farnborough, the University Centre of Farnborough provides degree-level courses, accredited by the University of Surrey. There are multiple Universities that are located within short distance of the town, including the University of Reading, the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, the University of Surrey in Guildford, and the Royal Holloway campus for the University of London in Egham, Surrey.
Whilst in the beautiful town of Farnborough, there are an abundance of fun activities to do, and place to visit. Gravity Force near Camberley is a trampoline park that features goals, dodgeball zones and soft pits, perfect for all the family. It’s a great way to really let loose and have an energetic experience close to the town. For those who love nature and walks, Basingstoke Canal is a must. There are many beautiful birds and wildlife all around the water, and the scenery is something spectacular. If the kids are looking for somewhere to go, then Frimley Lodge Park may be the answer- the playground is full of fun things to do, including play areas, mini railways, picnic areas, pitch and putt, woodlands and pitches for rugby and football. In Farnborough itself is the Benedictine Saint Michael’s Abbey, which is visited by many who pass through the area. It’s famous for its rich history and graves of notable people. There are plenty of things to see and do in the area, and Farnborough continues to be interesting, for those who live or just visit this Hampshire town.
