    Removals Stockbridge

This picturesque town in the heart of the test valley is one of the smallest in the UK.  It sits astride the River Test at the foot of the Stockbridge Downs in West Hampshire.

It was first attested in the charter of 1239 and the local legend is that the name derives from a bridge made from Stocks or tree trunks.  It is set on the A30, once a route used between the two medieval cities of Winchester and Salisbury. It was also on a drover’s route used for sheep and cattle to Wales.

The town is built around one long wide street, very similar to how it would have looked from the 12th century onwards. Many buildings are listed from this the 13th century to 19th century.

There are schools, doctors and dentists in the town but it also has a remarkable range of shops, pubs and cafes that helped it achieve the best foodie street award in 2010. There are also art galleries, craft and gift shops

There are local B & Bs allowing you to stay and see many of the local sites. Many poets have been inspired by the region and there is a trail of 10 poems throughout the town.  Nearby there are a range of interests including a hill fort, gardens, vineyards and flying museum.

The River Test is world renowned for its trout fishing and Houghton Club is the oldest in England founded in 1882.  There is also a non-league football club.

Stockbridge is close to the A30 and not too far away from the A303.  Salisbury is only 15 miles away, Winchester is only 8 miles and so all facilities can be close to hand.

Danebury Vineyards is a privately-owned estate in the town, that covers seven acres of south-facing fields, that produces a variety of grapes, and wines. Their most renowned wine is Cossac, which is made using the traditional bottle fermentation method and aged for at least five years on its lees. It’s tasting notes are described as “lemon flowers and orange blossom, that are fresh from the start.” The vineyard often puts on fantastic events, especially during certain seasons. There are also opportunities to try the wines first hand, and there are annual festivals.

Danebury Hill Fort is an Iron Age site that was built during the 6th century BC. It covers 12 acres and is considered a type-site for hill forts and was in use for over half a millennium. In the hill, you can see the once hidden gateway, and the earth works give you a feel for the defences. There has been lots of archaeological digs over the past century, with 180,000 pieces of pottery and 240,000 pieces of bone and metal found. If you love walking, or taking in your surroundings, then Danebury Hill Fort is by far the place to go! Most areas around the site are of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and there is some beautiful wildlife around the fort too!

Houghton Lodge Gardens is an 18th century garden surrounded by the tranquil water of the River Test, complete with a woodland grotto, alpacas, and a kitchen garden. Explore the 14 acres, walk alongside the 52’ long pear tree. There is a herb garden with pharmaceutical, medicinal, natural dye, pot pourri and tea beds, near a fruit cage home to the sweetest of raspberries. The gardens are worth a visit, and will help clear your mind, whilst admiring the beauty of Hampshire.

Test Valley Secondary School and Stockbridge Primary School are two fantastic schools nestled in the heart of the town, aiming to bring together the entire community. Both schools are high performing, and the transfer rate from one to the other is high, as the transition is natural, being so close and the schools linking together well.

The two nearest Universities are both in the same county, University of Winchester being the closest, and Southampton Solent and University of Southampton being slightly further.

Living in Stockbridge means you are well positioned for attendance at most schools in the area, and the distance to local Universities and cities is beneficial for further education.

By car, you can take the A303 and follow signs to Stockbridge (using the A3057). It is recommended to check your route prior to travel, as alternate routes may be quicker, and some roads may be closed. Access to Stockbridge from the south is easy through the A303, M4 and M3.

By train, Andover is close to Stockbridge, therefore travel from London, and the south-west is very easy. London Waterloo goes straight to the lovely village of Grateley, 7 miles away from Stockbridge.

By bus, there are many services that run through Stockbridge from nearby towns and villages. It is recommended to look at bus timetables and routes prior to travel.
