Sat astride the River Test is the small civil parish of Stockbridge, a Hampshire town whose name originates from its early use as a coach stop where stock could be picked up. Robert of Gloucester was captured by William of Ypres in the town in 1141, and King James II dined at the Swan inn in 1688, which still runs today. Five smaller river channels flow through the town, and there is a shared pedestrian footpath, the Test Way, that also passes through. The hatchery in the south of the town makes Stockbridge renowned for trout fishing, and Country Life described the town as the dream of every fly-fisher, thanks to the 13 miles of prime trout breeding and fishing waters. The town’s history has inspired lots of poets over the years, and there is a trail of 10 poems set in stone and glass that follow you around the town centre. In the 2010 Google Street View Awards, the High Street was voted “Best Foodie Street”, mostly down to the abundance of independent specialist shops such as the team rooms, pubs, galleries, craft shops and gift shops. This little Hampshire town has a lot of charm and has its own beautiful personality that will make anyone who lives in or around Stockbridge not want to be anywhere else. Its roaming hills, fantastic history and tiny shops makes it a real gem, and a visit will help you understand the fascination with this Hampshire settlement.
