Location

The city of Winchester lies along the course of the River Itchen, 13 miles from Southampton, its closest city. Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, with the distinction of the longest nave and length in all Gothic cathedrals in Europe. In the early 1900s, the cathedral almost collapsed. An experienced diver was called in to repair the damage, which took him 6 years, by working underwater for 6 hours at a time. The bells chime every day at 8pm, and have done so since medieval times, as a curfew bell for the residents of Winchester. Winchester is the ‘county town’ of Hampshire, and it known for its Christmas markets and public events.

The eldest son of King John and Isabella of Angouleme, King Henry III, was born at Winchester Castle. The castle itself was used by Royalists in the English Civil War, before falling to Parliamentarians in 1646.

Since 1974, Winchester has hosted the annual Hat Fair, a celebration of street theatre- performances, workshops, gatherings and talks. The city hosts one of the UK’s largest famers’ markets, with about 100 stalls, certified by FARMA- a co-operative association of farmers, producers and market organisations in the country.

In March 2016, Winchester was named as the best place to live in Britain by the ‘Sunday Times’ Best Places to Live’ guide, described as an ‘historic, cultured, foodie city’ that is ‘practically perfect’. The city has been used for the production of many Hollywood blockbuster films, including the Da Vinci Code, Les Misérables and The Riot Club.

Leisure

Marwell Zoo, just outside of Winchester, is an 140 acre park home to a range of exotic and endangered species, in beautiful, landscaped surroundings. There are Cheetahs, Snow Leopards, Giraffes and more available to see at the Zoo, and adventure playgrounds, rail trains, tropical houses and exploration locations all on site. It is a fun day out for all the family, and it will transport you to another world. Fifteen centuries of English history lie behind the magnificent Cathedral, which stands in the heart of the city, once a seat of Anglo-Saxon and Norman royal power. Why not absorb the astounding history, and appreciate the sincere beauty of the architecture by paying a visit to Winchester Cathedral? Take a look around, have a picnic on the garden, take a selfie from the outside, make a prayer inside, however you wish to show you appreciation for this historical site of interest, it is a visit worth taking when in Winchester. There are some great venues within the city, providing a variety of shows, concerts and comedy events, all with a central location. The Theatre Royal is a 400 seat Edwardian-style auditorium that specialises in comedy, drama and music events, as well as running a youth community programme. The Guildhall offers fantastic tribute acts, themed nights and fairs. There is plenty to do in the area, no what your tastes!

Schools

There is an abundance of primary and secondary schools throughout the city, all with varying numbers of pupils, ages, genders and locations. St Swithun’s School is a girl only schools, for ages 3-18, which is one of the most highly recommended all-girls schools in the county. Brockwood Park schools has a lower number of pupils, but educates 4-20 year olds of both genders, and has a fantastic history results and standards, which makes it a top choice for those moving to, or living in, the area. The University of Winchester has origins tracing back to 1840 and is the only University in the UK to be awarded a five-star rating for overall organisational excellence by the British Quality Foundation. The central location of the University means it is highly sort after, and transport to and from the campuses is simple through bus stations and train station being a close walk away. Winchester offers a wide range of educational opportunities, whether it be through its wide selection of primary and secondary schools, its University, or its idyllic location, meaning transport to Southampton, London and Portsmouth is simple, great for work or further studies.
