    6 Quirky Facts About Hedge End

    1. Gone Roman
      Hedge End was once the site of a Roman road running from a fortified harbour in what is now Bitterne to Portchester Castle.
    2. Common As
      Originally part of Botley Common, Hedge End developed around the site of what was an annual fair and weekly market, open to common traders and commoners.
    3. Spanish Armada
      In 1588 a beacon was lit as part of a chain of signals to warn of the approaching Spanish Armada. The beacon sat on the site of what had once been a hill top fort during the Iron Age.
    4. Hard Knock Life
      The area of Hedge End and West End once had a workhouse that took in poor families from Southampton.
    5. Air Raid Shelter
      During WWII many wealthy Southampton families rented homes or rooms in Hedge End to escape German bombing raids that attacked the city and port.
    6. War Effort
      In the lead up to D-Day keeping troop movements secret was so important that restrictions were placed on the movements of the local population of Hedge End. This was to prevent anyone seeing see the men and equipment being amassed in the area.

    Hedge End has excellent transport links while being surrounded by countryside and is close to the New Forest National Park. There are local, independent shops, restaurants, cafes and a friendly community feel giving the benefits of village living and proximity to a vibrant city.

    Leisure

    Sport does play a major part in local life. There are two major footballs teams in the area (Portsmouth FC and Southampton FC), Hampshire County Cricket Ground is just down the road and there are a number of golf clubs to choose from. Hedge End also has a leisure centre with gym, fitness classes and swimming pool.

    There is a busy events calendar and the bright lights, retail parks, shopping malls and theatres of Southampton are within easy reach.

    Transport

    There’s a choice of junctions on to the M27 which offers routes to the Brighton and the M3 for London and the M25. Southampton International Airport is 9 minutes and it’s just 15 minutes to Southampton. The town is also on the Portsmouth to Waterloo line (roughly 90 minutes).
