    Hounslow – 6 Quirky Facts

    1. Stand & Deliver!
Dating back to the Roman era and the ancient road known as ‘The Devil’s Highway’, Hounslow has always stood on a major route in and out of London. It was this route that became a favoured hunting ground for highwaymen (who rode on horse and targeted the rich) and footpads (a more low-rent type of robber who came on foot, targeting poorer pedestrians) and some of the most famous and feared highway robbers once stalked those traveling through the heathland.
    2. Revolting
It’s also seen more than its share of military movements. The Romans started it, keeping the locals under their rule with a number of military camps around Hounslow Heath and beyond. Oliver Cromwell camped on the heath with his New Model Army to protect against King Charles I, and James II also trained his troops there as a display of power to Parliament during the short lived Glorious Revolution. When Napoleon Bonaparte was threatening English shores, an army barracks was created to protect the city and also to prevent Londoners following ‘Old Boney’s’ lead and revolting against the crown. The Hounslow Cavalry Barracks were used in WWI and was the HQ of Eastern Command in WWII.
    3. Bohemian Rhapsody Semi-detached
You might not think of Hounslow as a musical hotbed but it once housed the rather ordinary bedroom of one of the UK’s most flamboyant performers. Young Farookh Bulsara, aka Freddi Mercury, grew up in Hounslow before meeting Bryan May and Roger Taylor while studying at Ealing College of Art and Design.
    4. Chickenfeed
Sir Thomas Morris was a self-made man from humble beginnings who established a chicken farming empire in Hounslow. A philanthropist, he believed in creating a better life for those less fortunate and as well as building houses, established a free school for under-privileged children so they could receive an education. He was also a distant relative of turkey tycoon Sir Bernard Matthews.
    5. Elbow Room
The area might seem busy today but at the time of the Domesday Book less than 200 people populated the borough. Within the Hundred of Hounslow there were 146 villagers, 10 smallholders, 6 cottagers, 1 priest, a fishery, meadows, ploughland, 2 mills and 500 sheep.
    6. Fancy Seeing You Here!
A surprising number of famous faces have resided in Hounslow; Sir David Attenborough, Hugh Grant, Phil Collins, William Hogarth, Pocahontas, Sir Mo Farah, Pete Townsend (Who studied alongside Freddie Mercury and Ronnie Wood), Jimmy Carr and Vincent Van Gough who taught for three years in Isleworth.
