Ireland Facts – Did you know…

    1. Not Patrick
St Patrick wasn’t Irish or called Patrick. Welshman Maewyn Succat was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland where he spread Christianity.
    2. Away with the...
In 1999 the M18 motorway opened 10 years later than scheduled following a national campaign for it to be rerouted to protect a tree belonging to fairies.
    3. Dracula O’Rourke
Dracula written by Irishman Bram Stoker, was partly based on local legends of a creature known as ‘Abhartach’, an old Gaelic vampire myth.
    4. The Goat King
Held in the village of Killorglin, each year the Puck Fair crowns a goat ‘King’ for three-day event. We’re not kidding! (we’ll see ourselves out).
    5. Ginger & Proud
Roughly 10% of the population is ginger, a higher proportion than any other country worldwide.
    6. See Ya Later
According to research, over 17% of Irish people will move abroad at some point. That’s 1 out of every 6 adults.
    7. Liffey Water
More Guinness is sold in Africa than Ireland. It’s so popular there are three breweries on the continent to keep Africans refreshed.
    8. Doh!
After the Irish Government was found guilty by the European Economic Community of inequality in the workplace, it immediately set about righting their wrong and created a new role for an Equal Pay Enforcement Officer. The job offered a different salary for men and women.

    Ireland – Useful Information

Due to an agreement between the UK and Irish governments, UK citizens do not need a visa or work permit to live and work in Ireland.

In Ireland they drive on the left, the same as the UK. It is a fairly easy procedure to import your car to Ireland if you are staying long term. It will have to undergo an inspection (similar to an MOT) and be registered in Ireland with Irish plates. You may be required to pay VAT.

If you’re moving to Ireland it’s worth noting that on average, rental prices are slightly higher than the UK. However, if you’re buying property, Irish prices are lower (per metre²).
