    Mere Facts – Did you know…

    1. Not Very Rock n Roll?
      The town is home to the UK’s only brush museum.
    2. Rock On!
      Lot Long the thatcher, whose photograph appears on the cover of Led Zepeplin’s album Led Zeppelin IV, lived and worked in the town.
    3. Made of Wool
      You won’t find knitted houses, but the town’s growth developed due to the wool and clothe trade.
    4. Proper Drop
      Yapp Brothers wine merchants were established in the town in 1973. The site was previously a dairy and a brewery.
    5. Proper Charlie
      The Manor of Mere was granted to Richard, Earl of Cornwall in 1243. It still forms part of The Duchy Cornwall under the ownership of King Charles who retains a keen interest in the area.
      Duchy Manor School opened in 1966.
    6. King of the Castle
      In 1253 (brother of Henry III) Richard built a castle which was deserted in the 14th century. The earthworks are still in place and several of the older houses still standing were constructed using stone ‘borrowed’ from the abandoned castle.
    7. Bing
      Located in the town, Chandlers Charles Farris have been making candles since 1845. The company began in Kensington and today produce candles for the clergy. Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral both use Farris candles, the company also has a Royal Warrant.
    8. Godric
      Mera was listed in the Domesday Book (1086) when it had 11 households and the Tenant in Chief was Godric the Hunter. The name derives from the Old English word maere meaning ‘boundary’.

    About

    The town sits beside the A303 which itself sits on parts of the Fosse Way, an ancient Roman road linking important Roman settlements and forts. Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB are both on within easy reach.

    An Iron Age hill fort, White Hill Camp was one of the earliest settlements. There are also several barrows (ancient burial mounds), which were looted over the centuries.

    A rural area, riding is a popular past time and farming forms a major part of the local economy.

    Leisure

    There’s plenty to offer sporty types moving to Mere, football, cricket and bowls clubs, tennis courts and a skate park. There are also plenty of good eateries in the area, several listed buildings and miles of countryside to explore.

    As well as the illustrious brush museum, there is a museum dedicated of the history of the town.

    September ushers in the popular Carnival, while October heralds the arrival of the Mere Literary Festival. Mere Golf Club is also popular with a luxury hotel and spa.
