Sitting on the old Fosse Way, a Roman road that ran across what was to become the Kingdom of Wessex, Mere is a historic town with a castle and close proximity to the MODs largest training ground, Salisbury Plain.
The town has a number of delightful buildings and good independent shops. Surrounded by stunning countryside it offers great escapes in an area dominated with agriculture plus woodland, bike trails and a number of riding stables.
It really is all about the great outdoors. There is so much to get out and see in this neck of the Wiltshire woods. Mere is close to a number of showgrounds with major annual attractions (Motcombe, Bath & West Showground, Frome) plus Wincanton Racecourse if you fancy a punt. 22 miles from Salisbury on the A303, Mere offers good access to the M3 for routes to London and the M25. The closest train station is Gillingham, a 10-minute drive.
