Milton Keynes – 5 Quirky Facts

    1. Park Life!
In Milton Keynes you’re never more than half a mile from the nearest park. In total the town has 165 parks (and counting) covering more than 5,000 acres of sports fields, play areas, woodland and 15 lakes. More than 60% of the entire borough is green space. There are 300km of cycle and footpaths and the Peace Pagoda garden has over 1,000 trees, planted in honour of people (soldiers and civilians) killed in all wars.
    2. Just Like New York!
The main roads across the town are laid out in the American grid system. While most UK towns and cities have gradually evolved encompassing medieval streets and routes that had no central planning, the US system employed by Milton Keynes is simpler to navigate and plan events/improvements. To make things even easier, roads that are horizontal on the grid have an ‘H’ in the name, vertical roads have a ‘V’. Midsummer Boulevard, MK’s most central street, is aligned so that the sun shines along its length on Midsummer’s Day.
    3. Pop People
The 2011 census recorded Milton Keynes had a younger than average population, with a total of 229,941 people living within the borough. Over 7,000,000 people live within 1 hour of Milton Keynes. 90% of the whole of England and Wales is within a 5-hour drive.
    4. New Town
Built on the site of Middleton Kaynes, a village dating back to the 13th century, modern Milton Keynes wasn’t built until 1967. Originally the plan was to build a ‘attractive’ town for 250,000 residents, in an area of 21,869 acres that offered “opportunity and freedom of choice”. We’re not sure the original plans mentioned the 130 roundabouts or concrete cows.
    5. Don’t Have Cow!
The much-maligned concrete cows are part of Milton Keynes folklore. Built in 1978 by Canadian artist Liz Leyh, plans were once put forward for them to be removed but a petition by locals demanded they stay. During their time in MK, the now famous cows have been have been stolen, kidnapped (and held for ransom), beheaded, painted pink, painted in pyjamas and been graffitied with “BSE” (during the mad cow disease crisis).
