Netherlands Facts – Did you know…

    1. Tallboys
The Dutch are the tallest nation in the world, on average males stand at 183.78 cm (6 feet) and females 170.36 cm (5 feet 7 inches).
    2. On Ya Bike!
There are more bikes than people, 22 million in fact or 1.3 bikes per person. They cycle an average of 2.9km per day, using bikes for over 25% of journeys, compared to just 2% in Britain.
    3. Boys From The Black Stuff
The Netherlands consume around 32 million kilos of liquorice a year. That’s 2 kilos per person. No wonder they cycle so much!
    4. Orange Carrots
After Prince William III (William of Orange) won Dutch independence from Spain, a new variety of carrots were created in his honour. Tastier and easier to grow, they replaced traditional purple carrots worldwide.
    5. Dutch Courage
The Dutch invented jenever (gin) in the 16th century. It became popular in the UK when Prince William became the King of Britain, leading to the term ‘Dutch courage’.
    6. It’s Not ‘Holland’
The country is formerly the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Holland only refers to 2 of the 12 provinces, Zuid-Holland (South Holland) and Noord-Holland (North Holland).
    7. Tulips From Amsterdam
80% of the world’s flower bulbs are grown here. The flower industry makes up over 5% of the country’s GDP.
    8. Low Point
Over 60% of the land sits under sea level. The lowest point, Zuidplaspolder, is 6.7 metres below sea level. Even the national airport, Schiphol, is 3 metres below de zee.
    9. High Point
The highest point, Vaalserberg Hill, stands 323 metres above sea level. That’s just 13 metres taller than London’s Shard building.
    10. And Finally…
If you love numbers we have 1 more for you… The Netherlands has over 1,000 windmills (mic drop, bow, exit stage left!).
