    Oxshott – 7 Quirky Facts

    1. ‘er Next Doors
Small but exclusive, Oxshott has had plenty of celebrity residents; Colin Montgomerie (golfer), Didier Drogba (footballer), David Hamilton (radio DJ), David Lloyd (founder of David Lloyd Leisure Clubs), Sir Andy Murray (tennis player), Jamie Redknapp (footballer, TV presenter), Violette Cordery (racing driver) and John Terry (footballer) have all been residents you might have spotted queuing in the fish and chip shop at one time or another.
    2. Shopaholic
Sophie Kinsella made Oxshott the hometown of the main protagonist, Becky Bloomwood, in her much-loved Shopaholic novels. No, that doesn’t mean you can use that as an excuse, “Well, she started it!”.
    3. Oxshott FC
You might also have noticed the high number of footballers in the list of locals. Well, that only just scratches the surface. Oxshott was once pronounced, “the village with the most footballers in it” by the Daily Telegraph. Not too surprising really as Chelsea FC have their training ground nearby which is a shame as otherwise Oxshott would be able to field a very impressive and star studded first 11.
    4. It Ain’t Cheap
Oxshott is also often called the “most expensive village in England”. Possibly down to the number of multi-millionaire footballers moving in.
    5. No Oxon Here!
The name Oxshott has nothing to do with bovine beasts, it derives from ‘ocga sceat’ meaning ‘corner of land’.
    6. Oh Canada
During WWII the regiment of Canadian engineers that built the Cabinet War Rooms were stationed in Oxshott.
    7. Lake Side
The village once had a thriving brickmaking industry. Clay Pit Lake is a result of the clay being dug to form the bricks. When the brickworks closed down in 1954 the pit was flooded creating the lake which is believed to be 100 ft deep. The bottom of the lake also contains machinery and a workman’s cottage.

    About Oxshott

Described as the ‘richest village in England’, Oxshott has been home to be-knighted Wimbledon champs, international footballers, Ryder Cup golfers and even fictional shopaholics. In a delightful corner of Surrey (it’s even how it got its name), Oxshott is a little bit special, even by Surrey standards. Great food, high end shops, good restaurants and within easy reach of London and the South Coast.

    Leisure

There is plenty to keep residents busy. Mile after mile of countryside to explore, a choice of nearby golf courses, there are theme parks a family car drive away and more country pubs than you can shake an Old English Sheepdog at (yes, many of them are dog-friendly).

    Transport

Less than 15 miles from London, commuters can be at Waterloo in 30 minutes. Drivers have the A3 and M25 conveniently close while remaining discreetly out of sight. But if you really need to get away the nation’s two busiest airports Gatwick and Heathrow are both under 40 minutes by car.
