What is the history of Bath?

The Somerset city of Bath, famous for its stone and spa waters, became part of the county of Avon in 1974, but established itself as a ceremonial county in Somerset following Avon’s abolition 22 years later. Solsbury Hill, overlooking the current city, was an Iron Age hill fort, made famous by the Peter Gabriel song of the same name. The Genesis vocalist produces songs at his Real-World Studios just outside Bath. Uranus was first discovered by William Herschel in his back garden on New King Street in the city centre. Around 17,500 Roman coins were found in 2007 in the foundations of the Gainsborough Bath Spa, and 30,000 more in 2012. The coins found dated as far back as the 3rd century and were later sold at auction. More than 19,000 Bath buildings were destroyed in the World War Two Blitz, and among the firefighters assigned to the scene was Harry Patch, who became the last surviving British army veteran from the First World War. The Grade I listed Bath Abbey is the largest example of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country and is able to seat 1,200 people. It is built from Bath stone, an oolitic limestone that contains fragments of calcium carbonate. It has been used all over the world, and the majority of buildings in the city are made from it.

Leisure

Bath has lots on offer all year round and attracts visitors from far and wide. The Roman Baths are a great sight to behold and show off the city’s rich history and architecture. However, if after seeing one of the greatest religious spas of the ancient world, you feel like you would like a relaxation session, take a short walk to the Thermae Spa, which boasts a roof-top pool, treatment rooms and saunas. There are lots of shops to visit, with the recently built SouthGate providing restaurants such as ThaiKhun and Giraffe, and such clothing outlets as Superdry, Hollister, RiverIsland and Topshop/Topman. However, as you walk closer towards the abbey from SouthGate, you will notice more independent shops, as well as street-sellers, entertainers and buskers. The beauty of Bath’s buildings will take you by surprise, as you find yourself standing next to structure with history that dates as far back as the Romans. The entertainment and music scene is something Bath provides itself in, with regular performances at Komedia, The Forum, Guildhall and Moles, each offering a variety of music, drama, classical concerts and formal events. The station and bus station are located opposite the SouthGate shopping centre, so visiting for the day or transport further afield from the city is always an option.

Schools

Bath itself has a large number of both secondary and primary schools, some private and some public. Nearby Bathampton, Batheaston, Cameley and Chew Valley also have a selection of schools, to widen your choices depending on housing location. Bath has two Universities- Bath Spa and University of Bath, in addition to Bath College offering higher education courses also. However, if travel is required, Bath’s idyllic location means access to surrounding towns and cities is straight-forward when planned.

Transport

By car, the A4 runs through the city, and access to and from surrounding towns and cities, such as Bristol and Chippenham, is simple, due to a designated junction for Bath on the M4.

By train, active services run to Bath Spa station in the centre of the city, perfect for day trips, shopping or study.

By bus, there are services that run to surrounding towns and villages from Bath, and there is a central bus station next to the train station.
