About Bruton

This small ancient town dates back to Saxon times, and clings to a hill above a valley with the river Brue running through it. With its narrow main street and crowded together buildings the town is protected from development by its geography. Narrow medieval alleys called Bartons (once used for holding cattle prior to market) lead down from the High Street to Lower Backway which runs beside the river. Unusual historic street names including Quaperlake Street and Plox, have their roots in Anglo-Saxon place names.

Sexey’s Hospital in the High Street was built in 1638 and consists of a chapel, hall and almshouses around a quadrangle with a beautiful view down to the river. The ancient Packhorse Bridge, a school which opened in 1519, an imposing parish church, the abbey remains and a dovecote high on a hill are some of the other features of this little country town. The ancient Dovecote with its 200 pigeonholes stands on a hill dates from around the 16th century, and is thought to have been a watchtower for Bruton Abbey.

Wool was the main industry of the town in the middle ages giving way to the silk industry in the late 18th century. Today Bruton’s two main industries are farming and education.
