If you are moving house, looking to start a new life in Castle Cary or retiring to Castle Cary, we can help you.
Castle Cary is a small, attractive country town situated some 12 miles north-east of Yeovil and 24 miles south of Bath. It lies on the edge of rolling countryside between the Somerset Levels to the west and the high ridgeline of Penselwood to the east, halfway between the Mendip Hills and the Blackmore Vale. The main Paddington to Penzance railway line runs about a mile to the north.
The old part of Castle Cary, which is still the town centre and contains buildings like the Market House, the Round House, and the old George Inn, runs along the foot of steep, grassy Lodge Hill, below where the castle used to stand. Most modern development has taken place on the gently rising land to the north, joining the town with the village of Ansford. About 2,000 people live in the town (about 3,000 including Ansford). The town is the main centre for a large area of South Somerset, offering a wide range of shops and services, and free parking (unlike many other towns in the area). Castle Cary is a FairTrade town.
In terms of hotels amongst many choices, Castle Cary offers one of the best and most prestigious county house hotels, Hadspen House, the 17th-century mansion on the edge of town with a spa, visitor centre, restaurant, kitchen garden, café, farm shop and cider mill – not forgetting the restoration of the historic gardens. Castle Cary railway station is o n the main Reading to Taunton line and the Heart of Wessex line . It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the town. Every year around the time of the summer solstice this railway station is used by thousands of festival-goers who travel to nearby Worthy Farm for the Glastonbury Festival (about 7 miles from Glastonbury) – a parade of free buses and coaches take ticket holders to and from the festival site.
Bus services operate from the town to Yeovil, Shepton Mallet, Street, and Wincanton.
