If you are moving house, looking to start a new life in East Coker or retiring to East Coker, we can help you.
If you are looking for a stunning place to live which offers tranquillity, history and yet has lots to do, follow the lead of poet TS Eliot and head to East Coker.
The working farming village, population around the 1,700 mark, has many claims to fame, not least that it attracts TS Eliot’s fans from around the world after he not only wrote about it but had his ashes scattered there. Unsurprisingly, there is a village poetry group among the many clubs and societies.
Another famous son of East Coker is a globetrotting pirate who introduced more than 1,000 words to the English language, including posse, avocado, barbecue, chopsticks and sea-lion!
William Dampier was orphaned at the age of 16 and went to sea where he became a pirate, adventurer and explorer. In 1688, he landed in Western Australia, the first Englishman to walk on the continent, 100 years before the arrival of the first fleet in Botany Bay. Later, he was responsible both for leaving Alexander Selkirk on an island and then rescuing him – Selkirk was the model for Robinson Crusoe.
The village’s connection to the sea goes further – the sails on Lord Nelson’s ships at the Battle of Trafalgar were made in East Coker, when the village was an important producer of flax and hemp.
Claims to fame aside, in East Coker’s gorgeous yellow hamstone houses there live a broad range of age groups – it is not a retirement community. There are activities and clubs for all ages and many local businesses. The local primary school is small and features some mixed age classes and there are pubs and a café and a busy and well rated farm shop.
The parish includes the hamlets and areas of North Coker, Burton, Holywell, Coker Marsh, Darvole, Nash, Keyford as well as the southern end of the Wraxhill area. Historic buildings are numerous here. There are three Grade I listed buildings – Naish Priory has portions dating back to the 14th century, Hymerford House, by the mill stream, is 15th century, and just south-west of the church is Coker Court, the manor house, which is Tudor. There’s also a central 15th century village hall and 12 mid-17th century (c1640) Helyar almshouses intended for 11 women and one man.
The Heylar family are also responsible for planting a globally important tree, an ulmus minor which has been a TROBI UK Champion, and has been adjudged the finest freestanding specimen in Europe. It was even cloned at Le Pépinière Forestière de L’etat, Guémené-Penfao, France, as part of the Euforgen genetic resources conservation programme.
