Why is Shepton Mallet an idyllic location?
Twinned with Misburg, Germany and Bollnas in Sweden, Shepton Mallet is a historic market town in the Mendip District of Somerset. The main Roman road that leads into the south-west of England, Fosse Way, runs through the town, as does the River Sheppey. ‘Shepton’ derives from the Old English for sheep farm, and the second part of the name comes from the Norman Malet family, who took a lease from Glastonbury Abbey in the year 1100. Shepton Mallet is halfway between Bath and Ilchester and is around 18 miles from Bristol and 5 miles from Wells. In the Medieval period, wool was the most important trade in the town. Since the 18th century, it was overtaken by the cider industry. The countryside surrounding the town is mostly used by farmers, although there are a lot of nearby woodlands. The views when entering the Mendip Hills are breath-taking and are some of the finest in the country. Nearby Cheddar Gorge is a famous viewpoint and walk, and is also the birthplace of the famous cave-aged cheese Cheddar.
