If you are moving house, looking to start a new life in West Coker or retiring to West Coker, we can help you.
A working Victorian factory is the jewel in the crown of a large village near Yeovil, in south Somerset.
West Coker, which has a population of 3,000 and sits three miles out of town, became a rope-making hotspot after it was discovered that its soil was ideal for growing flax and hemp.
There are nods to West Coker’s rope-making past everywhere, but it is the last surviving rural twineworks that really brings the past to life.
Dawe’s Twineworks still has the original machinery used when such factories were commonplace in the area. It still turns out rope, twine and sailcloth and is kept going thanks to a band of volunteers, who rescued it after 37 years of neglect in 2005. Coker Canvas was highly prized by naval captains during the Napoleonic Wars.
The village also pays tribute to rope-making with its Millennium project, Hatherstone Wood – an eight-acre haven at Primrose Hill enjoyed by all the villagers. A hamstone seat features rope scrolling and people can sit and look at the wildflower area and pond as they enjoy all the features dreamed up in 1999.
Beyond rope-making and the history books, this is a busy and thriving village which has much to offer.
There are lots of clubs for children and adults and many facilities.
West Coker has two pubs, The Castle Inn and the Royal George. The Castle Inn was completely gutted by fire in 2013, although operated for a number of years after before being closed permanently in 2016. It was due to re-open in April 2020 after a refit.
Near the village centre there is a garage (which carries out MoT tests, sells fuel and incorporates a local shop), a butcher’s shop, a post office, Lanes Hotel/restaurant and a bistro. About one mile to the east are the Yeovil Court hotel and a petrol station and convenience store.
There are other small businesses on the site of a former twineworks in East Street. West Coker Primary school has about 80 pupils. The West Coker Commemoration Fund is a charity which administers the affairs of the village hall.
The original manor house burned down during an attack in the Wars of the Roses, although the current hamstone manor house has medieval origins, the earliest surviving portions probably being of around 1500. It is a grade I listed building.
West Coker is Thomas Hardy’s Narrowbourne, and features in the story A Tragedy of Two Ambitions in his collection Life’s Little Ironies published in 1894.
Nearby is the Hardington Moor Site of Special Scientific Interest and national nature reserve where meadows are examples of species-rich unimproved neutral grassland, which is now nationally rare.
