Why is Weston super Mare so idyllic?
The Somerset seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, on the Bristol Channel, has been inhabited since the Iron Age. ‘Weston’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon for settlement and ‘super mare’ is Latin for above sea. Early in the 19th century, Weston was a small village of about 30 houses, all situated directly behind a line of sand dunes front the sea. Buildings in the town use local stone in their construction, mostly from the local quarry. This helps give the notable sites more character and distinctiveness. Construction began on Weston Pier in 1903, but due to dangerous fire, the piers end was destroyed. In early 2008, £1,000,000 was spent on installing new features, but another fire in the same year caused its destruction. In 2010, the pier reopened, and attracted more than 100,000 on the first two days. A survey by Visit England ranked the pier as one of the top ten free attractions in England. In 2015, the artist Banksy opened a temporary art installation ‘Dismaland’ at the Tropicana in the town, a pop-up exhibition with a ‘sinister twist on Disneyland’. Weston super Mare has the second highest tidal range in the world, just short of the Bay of Fundi in Canada. Roald Dahl finished his education in the town before relocating and producing his beloved novels. Its idyllic location means it attracts visitors from all over the world, being just a short distance from Bristol, Wales and surrounding counties.
Armishaws always work to the highest standards and are proud to have held the BSEN 12522 certificate since 1999.
