Set on the River Wey in the district of Elmbridge in Surrey, the town of Weybridge is situated 16 miles southwest of Central London and covers a geographic area of 13.73km2. It appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, and until the 18th century, it was a small village with a river crossing. Weybridge railway crossing was opened by the London and Southampton Railway in 1838, after which Weybridge was announced as a town. In Weybridge Heath, a lowland heathland that covers 47 acres of land, there are many rare species of insects, rare birds, insectivorous plants, and Surrey Wildlife Trust invoked a scrub clearance plan in order to restore the habitat. Henry VIII started building the famous Oatlands Palace in the town in the year 1537 for his fourth wife Anne of Cleves, but little remains of the royal palace with multiple excavations taking place in the 20th century to rediscover its extent. At the top of Monument Hill is a World War I memorial, which is a popular visitor site for those in the area. The town has a very welcoming feel and has something for everyone. Whether its distance to London you are after, a pretty spot in the South of England, or a beautiful retirement destination, Weybridge is a very strong choice, and it’s clear to see why.
There are two schools for 11-18 years olds within the local area- Heathside School in the town itself and St George’s College in nearby Addlestone. There’s also a sixth form/college in the town, which focuses on those students taking BTECs. Weybridge is home to two primary schools, and one infant school. The University of Surrey is the closest University to Weybridge, located 14 miles away in the county town of Guildford. The journey time to London means that Universities within the capital are within easy reach, and trains run frequently, if driving is not possible.
There are a wide variety of things to do within the town, as well as just outside, within Surrey. The famous Thorpe Park Resort is a theme park just outside of Thorpe, with rides for all ages, events and a large choice of food outlets. There’s the Mercedes-Benz World facility in Weybridge, open to the public at the Brooklands motor racing circuit- a long standing motorsports venue and aerodrome. The Royal Horticultural Society site in Wisley is a vast garden including a glasshouse with 3 climatic zones, perfect for a summer day out. Surrey is home to multiple areas of natural beauty- North Downs are rural chalk hills, crossed by an ancient pilgrimage route, popular with walkers, naturists and those wanting some spectacular views; Box Hill is a scenic hill with trails and sweeping landscape sights; Surrey Hills Area is an open, designated space with walking trails perfect for running, walking, cycling and equestrian trails. The fact London is so close means days out in the city are never too much trouble, whether it’s for a gig, an evening watching a show, a big shop, etc. The seaside is also accessible by train, with locations like Brighton and Southend a short journey away. There are so many things to do whilst in Surrey, and in particular Weybridge.
By car, the M3 runs north of the town, and access to and from surrounding towns and cities, such as Guildford and Leatherhead is simple.
By train, active services run to Weybridge station in the centre of the town, perfect for day trips, shopping or study in places like London or other Southern destinations.
By bus, there are services that run to surrounding towns and villages from Weybridge, and there is a central bus station near to the train station.
