Verwood Facts – Did you know…

    1. Beautiful
Verwood’s name has developed over centuries. Originally the settlement had a French name and was first recorded as “Beau Bois”, meaning Beautiful Wood. The current name is thought to stem from “Fair Wood”.
    2. A Bit Useless
The acid soil wasn’t much use for farming. Sand, wood, clay, gorse were all used by locals to make simple tools to sell. When the Enclosures Act was passed, settlers were attracted by the unclaimed land and started erecting houses. In 1829 the entire population stood at around 400, reaching 6,000 by the 1960’s.
    3. A Bit Potty
Yellow clay found in the area has been used for making homeware since around the 4th century. By the Victorian era brick making and tiles had become a major source of local employment, with 30 kilns.
    4. By Foot
Originally the clay had to be flattened out, a process known as wedging, this involved men walking on the clay. Hawkers would then buy the finished pots, put them on hand drawn carts and take them off to sell.
    5. Famous Faces
Verwood has been home to a few familiar faces including TV comedy royalty. Eddie Howe, Lionel Jeffries, Jessie Matthews and Buster Merryfield have all lived here.
    6. Stephen’s Castle
The ancient monument Stephen’s Castle isn’t actually a castle at all. The raised area is an Iron Age burial mound or ‘barrow’, believed to have been the burial site of a tribal leader, Stephen who according to legend, threw a giant stone all the way to nearby Ringwood Forest. The stone, still in situ, weighs around 3 tonnes.

    About Verwood

Sitting in an area of marshland, despite its name (which derives from ‘Fair Wood’), Verwood was something of an ugly duckling. Much of the acidic soil was waterlogged. Certainly not great for agriculture, which in turn didn’t attract settlers. But what it did have in abundance was clay, potteries were soon established and the town flourished.

Today it has become a beautiful swan, with a good selection of local independent businesses, events, parks and miles of scenery.

    Leisure

The May Carnival is a riot of street food, entertainment, music and more. It gets lively again at the Rustic Fair each August Bank Holiday. If you’re a firm foodie, there’s a regular market where you’ll find fresh local produce as well as household goods and essentials.

If you’re looking for things to do further afield, then the Dorset Heavy Horse and Farm Park is a short drive away.

Potterne play area offers 12 acres of sports grounds for rugby, football, tennis, netball and cricket. There is a skate park and outside exercise equipment or if you’re more of a team player there is a rugby club, cricket club, football club and bowling club.

There are several riding centres and miles and miles of bridleways to explore. Golfers can get in the swing at nearby Crane Valley, 5 minutes from the town centre. Of if you prefer your exercise without a competitive edge, Moors Valley Country Park and Forest sits on the outskirts of town.

    Transport

Verwood is bookmarked by two roads. The A338 from Bournemouth (21 minutes) to Salisbury (37 minutes) lies to the east, while just south is the A31 which reaches the M27 and London via the M3. There is currently no rail station and the nearest airport is Bournemouth, 20 minutes by car.
