    Weybridge – 7 Quirky Facts

    1. Another Palace
Henry the VIII built Oatlands Palace in Weybridge for his wife (no 4!!) Anne of Cleaves, making it close to his favourite residence Hampton Court Palace which is just four miles away.
    2. Sister Act
Unfortunately for Anne, Henry had already ‘gone off’ her by then and declared her his ‘sister’ before promptly moving on to his next wife.
    3. Most Celebrated
Weybridge has long been a home for big stars including; Peter Crouch and Abbey Clancy, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Theo Paphitis, Cliff Richard and Tom Jones “H-yeah!”).
    4. Stand And Deliver!
Like much of Surrey, Weybridge was once plagued by highwaymen, prowling the roads in and out of London. If caught and found guilty they would be executed, then hung up at an area known as the Devil’s Punchbowl.
    5. Star Studded
The area of St George’s Hill has long been rather excusive and home to many famous names (including movie star Tommy Lee Jones). The private, gated estate is among the most expensive areas to own property in the UK.
    6. Last French King
The last King of France, King Louis-Philippe I lived in Surrey having fled his home country after the revolutionary wars. He was never to return home and lived out his life away from his homeland.
    7. Southern Region
The name Surrey comes from the Anglo-Saxon dialect and literally means “southern region”.

    About Weybridge

Evidence of the first settlement dates back to the Iron Age. Weybridge was recorded in the Doomsday Book and has featured throughout British history having been the residence of kings and queens. In more recent times it has become home to popstars, actors, TV personalities and even a racetrack, Brooklands. A bustling and popular commuter town, it has excellent transport links and a wide variety of shops and amenities.

    Leisure

As well as shopping (considered by many to be a very fine ‘hobby’), there is plenty to see and do. There’s a cinema, playhouse, theatre and a historical society dedicated to the town; weybridgesociety.org.uk.

Nearby there are nature parks, a number of palaces including Hampton Court Palace as well as grand estates, gardens and parkland.

Foodies will also find a very good selection of bars, cafes and restaurants.

    Transport

By car you can be in Central London in under an hour, the town is also just a short distance to the M25, M3 and M23 giving very good commuter links. Both Gatwick and Heathrow airports are within easy striking distance, while direct trains run to London Waterloo taking around half an hour.
