If you are moving house, looking to start a new life in Broad Chalke or retiring to Broad Chalke, we can help you.
It may be a relatively small village, but Broad Chalke has become famous in the last few years as it plays host to an enormous festival.
The Chalke Valley History Festival attracts thousands of visitors to the area, who come to take part in a host of fascinating activities, listen to talks by historians and watch performances – all in aid of the Chalke Valley History Trust, which is aimed primarily at bringing history to life for children.
The Chalke Valley History Festival started small in June 2011 as a cricket club fundraiser. Club stalwart and historian James Holland wanted to hold a festival, and Ottakar’s bookshops founder James Heneage suggested a history festival.
Now the lovely thatched cob walls are familiar to so many people, who flock here from all over the country for the festival.
They teem in, between the rivers Nadder and Ebble, where they come upon the dramatic valley setting of Broad Chalke, where historic homes lie along either side of the river and more modern properties have been built just beyond them.
Broad Chalke’s famous faces
The author John Aubrey (1626–1697) is perhaps the village’s most famous resident from history.
The photographer and designer Sir Cecil Beaton (1904-1980) lived at Reddish House, where he entertained and photographed many celebrities.
Reddish House has been home to a few celebs in its time. In 1980 Ursula Henderson – Countess of Chichester – bought the house and kept noisy, destructive and annoying macaws. Pop stars Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp bought Reddish from her.
