Nestled in-between Devizes and Chippenham is Wiltshire’s fourth largest town Melksham, whose name derives from the old English for ‘milk’ and ‘ham’. At the time of the Norman Conquest, Melksham was a royal estate, and was surrounded by a royal forest. In 1539, the nuns of Amesbury surrendered their Melksham estates to the king, which they held for 250 years. Before the Civil War, the town’s main industry was ‘white broad cloth’, but after the rate had been marked down, people found it hard to make a living. The plans to turn Melksham into a spa town in the 18th century never happened. Sadly, it couldn’t compete with Bath so the construction stopped, and some of the original buildings still stand today. The geographic location of Melksham is a large advantage – being so close to Chippenham, Bath, Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon.
We have helped moved many of our customers to and from Wiltshire. If you are aiming to retire to Melksham, or just looking for a move, we can help you move stress-free, and without any doubt.
