Removals in Salisbury

City living with tight knit community at its heart

It has been named the best place to live in the UK – where small town community spirit triumphs over city living. Welcome to Salisbury – dubbed ‘Smallsbury’ by locals in tribute to its tight-knit group of residents. The city was awarded the title in the Sunday Times list after pulling together after the Salisbury poisonings in 2019.

The community’s collective reaction to months of restrictions following the incident, where a former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned in a nerve agent attack, led to a judge praising its ‘real collective spirit’.

Things like this just never usually happen here, in this stunning cathedral city on the southern end of Wiltshire.

The Smallsbury tag – oddly it was once the largest settlement in Wiltshire – is an affectionate swipe at the small town feel of this gem of a city. The moment you approach and see the famous spire you get the feeling you are in a warm and welcoming place quite unlike a conventional city.

Salisbury is of course, home to one of only four copies of the Magna Carta in the world. The historic document is displayed at the cathedral, which draws millions of visitors from all over the world each year. This, and the ancient monument of Stonehenge a few miles from the city, ensures the city’s economy thrives.

There are many lovely areas to settle in around Salisbury, with the old city among the most prized. Homes within the old city walls come up for sale so rarely. The Close, which is surrounded by the 14th century city wall built from the stones of the first cathedral of Old Sarum, has to be one of the most sought-after addresses in the UK. Further out of the city there are lovely communities to look at. Laverstock, Netherhampton, Britford, Downton, Alderbury, Odstock and the neighbouring town of Wilton are all within a short drive of the city and offer the chance to live surrounded by lovely countryside while feeling part of the bustle of a city. Towards Stonehenge, Amesbury is a growing community supported by plenty of industry and infrastructure.

Travel and commuting from Salisbury is easy, as it sits fairly centrally for a quick commute to Bath, Bristol, London, Cardiff and Southampton. It is still a relatively small community, with 40,000 people in the city and 60,000 if you include the outlying areas.

Shopping centres include The Old George Mall, The Maltings, Winchester Street and the Crosskeys precinct.

The former home of Sir Edward Heath, Arundells in the Cathedral Close, is now open as a museum.

‘Good’ primaries, says Ofsted, include St Mark’s CofE, St Andrew’s CofE Laverstock, Sarum St Paul’s CofE, St Martin’s CofE, St Osmund’s Catholic and Woodlands. Secondaries: St Joseph’s Catholic is “good” with some “outstanding features”, and Bishop Wordsworth Grammar (boys) and South Wilts Grammar (girls) are both ‘outstanding’.

There are many facilities for sports and the arts here. The Salisbury Playhouse hosts a packed programme of entertainment and City Hall is an entertainment venue and hosts comedy, musical performances (including those by the resident Musical Theatre Salisbury) as well as seminars and conventions. Salisbury Arts Centre, housed in a redundant church, has exhibitions and workshops.

There are also lots of lovely eateries, but if you are cooking at home then the twice weekly market on Wednesdays and Saturdays are a must, offering a wide variety of fresh fruit and veg and many delicious artisan products.

After your shopping you might wish to take a seat in one of Salisbury’s historic pubs. The Haunch of Venison, overlooking the Poultry Cross, is in a 14th-century building. On display is a cast of a mummified hand, supposedly severed during a game of cards. Another pub, the Rai d’Or has original deeds dating from 1292. It was the home of Agnes Bottenham, who used the profits of the tavern to found Trinity Hospital next door in circa 1380.

Salisbury may be a small city, but it has a big impact on its visitors and residents.
