Early
Around 50,000 BCE, Swanage was still connected to the Isle of Wight. The first signs of human habitation come from the Middle Stone Age, around 2,500 years ago.
First Movers
Celts from France, then Romans moved to Swanage before the Saxons of Wessex defended the area from Viking invasion.
Swanage Built London
Mined just outside the town, Purbeck Stone was loaded at the docks then sailed to London and used to construct St Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Palace of Westminster and Buckingham Palace.
Alfred Memorial
The monument on the seafront reads; ‘In commemoration of a great naval battle fought with the Danes – in Swanage Bay by Alfred the Great. AD 877’.
Wasn’t Me!
However, accounts from the period say it was a great storm that sank 120 Vikings ships. Alfred himself referred to it as a ‘victory from God’.
Not An Island
The town sits on the Isle of Purbeck, which isn’t actually an island at all but a spur of land that juts out into the English Channel overlooking the Isle of Wight (which is a ‘proper’ island).
Watersports
The stunning bay, with its golden beach and sheltered position is ideal for watersports. The calm waters mean novices can learn in a safer environment. It’s also a popular destination with scuba divers.
The Pier
Now a popular tourist spot, the pier was originally built to load quarried stone to waiting ships. At one point the two main sources of local employment were the quarry and the sea.
Knollsea
The novelist Thomas Hardy called Swanage ‘Knollsea’ in his book The Hand of Ethelberta. “…everybody in the parish who was not a boatman was a quarrier”.

Is it a good place to live? This is picture postcard England. Pretty houses, sea views, plenty of local events and miles of countryside to get out and about.

Can I commute? Transport links and distance can make commuting difficult. Weymouth and Bournemouth are both 50 minutes away by car.

The town is famed for having ‘built London’ and supplied large amounts of stone for some of the capital’s most famous buildings.

Leisure

At times the town is all at sea. It hosts a sailing regatta and a number of excellent watersports activity companies, offering everything from boat tours and jetskis to scuba diving and paddle-boarding, so if you do want to dip your toe into a new hobby, the bay is the perfect place.

There’s a theatre and cinema, a great selection of independent shops and a fun park for days out. Foodies can have their fill at the annual food festival, there’s also a jazz festival and carnival.
