    8 Useless But Fun Canada Facts

    1. Expats
      There are over 650,000 ex-pat Brits living in Canada. That’s nearly 1% of the entire UK population all living in this welcoming and multicultural country.
    2. Donut Disturb
      The country is obsessed with doughnuts, chomping through a whopping 1 billion donuts a year. Not bad for a population of just 30 million.
    3. This Is War!
      But not a very scary one. Canada and Denmark have been disputing the tiny Hans Island since the 1930s. Sitting between Canada and Danish owned Greenland, the Canadians kicked off the spat by provocatively landing on the island, planting their flag and leaving a bottle of Canadian whiskey. The Danish didn’t take it lying down and dispatched their Minister of Greenland Affairs, who planted a Danish flag and left a bottle of schnaps. Yeah, take that!
    4. Sticky Business
      Canada produces over 70% of the world’s maple syrup. It’s big business. In 2012 the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist became national news when 3,000 tons of the sweet syrup was stolen from the International Strategic Syrup Reserve, worth $18 million dollars!!
    5. They’re Out There…
      Canada was the first country in the world to build a space port specifically for aliens. Opened in 1967 by the Canadian Defence Minister, the 130 tonnes landing pad also contains a time capsule that will be opened 100 years after the pad was built (and possibly contains the words “April fools!”).
    6. Snake Country
      The district of Manitoba has the largest concentration of snakes in the world. Each May around 70,000 snakes emerge from hibernation onto the region’s prairies. Canada is also home to over half the world’s polar bear population.
    7. It’s BIG!
      Measuring 125,567 miles, it would take 4.5 years to walk what is the world’s longest coastline. The nation is so vast that around 90% of it is completely uninhabited. Wood Buffalo National Park alone is huge, 17,300 miles², that’s bigger than the whole of Denmark, Switzerland or the Netherlands.
    8. Not American
      Canada has some impressive musical credentials; Celine Dion, Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, Drake, David Foster, Josh Groban are all Canadian. Other big home-grown stars often wrongly labelled American include; Ryan Reynolds, Mike Myers, Jim Carey, Kiefer Sutherland, Michael J. Fox, Dan Ackroyd and Matthew Perry.

    Moving to Canada – More Useful Information

    There are several different types of visas available for those wishing to settle there;

    • Work Visa                 For those moving to start a new job. Your new employer will be able to help you through this process.
    • Residency Visa                 For people wishing to make their move permanent through other means.

    You can apply for permanent residency through marriage, parentage or a number of government and provincial initiatives;

    • Economic Programs – Skilled workers, trades, etc.
    • Family sponsorship – Marriage or family ties.

    There is also a skilled worker program and a health worker program aimed at encouraging trained workers to settle in the country.

    If you are taking a cat or dog to Canada it will need;

    • Valid rabies vaccination certificate
    • Veterinary certificate
    • Microchip

    It will need to be older than 3 months. There are restrictions governing dangerous dog breeds.

    It is possible to use a UK bank in Canada, however, opening a Canadian account can help you avoid foreign currency transaction (and fluctuating exchange rates).

    Items you may be asked to produce to open an account in Canada include;

    • Current passport
    • Proof of Canadian residence/address
    • Proof of employment/pay slips
    • Financial records/bank statements

    Canada’s health system consistently scores highly for hygiene, wait times, access, etc. Canada’s healthcare is mostly paid for through taxes and is mostly free. You must have lived in Canada for three years to be eligible for free healthcare, some treatments are free to new arrivals but you may need health insurance.

    You can drive a car in Canada using a full UK license. Some hire car companies and insurance companies do require you to have a Canadian license.

    Importing cars to Canada can be an expensive process. On the whole cars a less expensive in Canada and it is certainly considered safer to switch to a left-hand drive car as this provides far better sightlines in a country that drives on the right.
