    Canada Facts – Did you know…

    1. Expats
      There are over 650,000 ex-pat Brits living in Canada. That’s nearly 1% of the entire UK population.
    2. Donut Disturb
      The country chomps through 1 billion donuts a year. Not bad for a population of just 30 million.
    3. Sticky Business
      Canada produces over 70% of the world’s maple syrup.
    4. Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist
      In 2012, 3,000 tons of syrup worth $18 million dollars was stolen from the International Strategic Syrup Reserve in what the press dubbed ‘The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist’.
    5. They’re Out There…
      In 1967 Canada became the first country in the world to build a space port specifically for aliens. The 130 tonnes landing pad also contains a time capsule to be opened in 2067 (it probably contains the words “April fools!”).
    6. War! What is it good for?
      Canada and Denmark have disputed tiny Hans Island since the 1930s. Sitting between Canada and Danish owned Greenland, the Canadians kicked off the spat by provocatively landing on the island, planting a flag and leaving a bottle of Canadian whiskey. The Danish hit back by planting their own flag and leaving a bottle of schnaps. Yeah, take that!
    7. Snake Country
      The district of Manitoba has the largest concentration of snakes in the world. Each May around 70,000 snakes emerge from hibernation onto the region’s prairies.
    8. Bear Country
      The country is also home to over half the world’s polar bear population.
    9. It’s BIG!
      Measuring 125,567 miles, it would take 4.5 years to walk the length of what is the world’s longest coastline. The nation is so vast that around 90% of it is completely uninhabited.
    10. How Big..?
      Wood Buffalo National Park alone covers 17,300 miles², that’s bigger than Denmark, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
    11. Not American
      The nation has impressive musical credentials; Celine Dion, Michael Bublé, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, Drake, David Foster and Josh Groban are all Canadian.
    12. Stars Not Stripes
      Other big home-grown stars include; Ryan Reynolds, Mike Myers, Jim Carey, Kiefer Sutherland, Michael J. Fox, Dan Ackroyd and Matthew Perry.

    Moving to Canada – Helpful Information

    There are several different types of visas;

    • Work Visa – Your new employer will be able to help you through this process.
    • Residency Visa – For people wishing to make their move permanent through other means.
    • Start Up Program – For entrepreneurs looking to start a new company in Canada.

    You can apply for permanent residency through marriage, parentage or government initiatives;

    • Economic Programs – Skilled workers, health workers, trades, etc.
    • Family sponsorship – Marriage or family ties.

    If you are taking a cat or dog it will need;

    • Valid rabies vaccination certificate
    • Veterinary certificate
    • Microchip

    Your pet must be older than 3 months. There are restrictions governing dangerous dog breeds.

    It is possible to use a UK bank while living here, however, opening a Canadian account can help you avoid foreign currency transaction (and fluctuating exchange rates).

    Items you may be asked to produce to open an account include;

    • Current passport
    • Proof of Canadian residence/address
    • Proof of employment/pay slips
    • Financial records/bank statements

    The country’s health system consistently scores highly for hygiene, wait times, access, etc. Healthcare is largely paid for through taxes and is mostly free. You must have lived in the country for three years to be eligible for free healthcare, but this doesn’t cover all treatments.

    You can drive using a full UK license. Some hire car companies and insurance companies do require you to have a Canadian license.

    Importing cars here can be expensive. On average, cars cost less in Canada and it’s considered safer to switch to a left-hand drive car as this provides far better sightlines in a country that drives on the right.
