    1. Cheers
      Australia has more than 60 separate wine regions.
    2. On The Beach
      There are over 10,000 beaches and if you were to visit 1 beach a day it would take you 27 years.
    3. Litterbugs
      When debris from NASA’s space station ‘Skylab’ crashed landed in Esperance in 1979, the town fined NASA $400 for littering.
    4. Winter Wonderland
      Yes, snow in Oz. The area known as the ‘Australian Alps’ covers an area larger than Switzerland and gets more snow.
    5. Indecent
      Between 1838 – 1902 swimming on Sydney’s beaches was made illegal, as the sight of scantily clad female swimmers was considered ‘indecent’.
    6. Goal!
      The largest ever victory in an international football match occurred in 2002 when Australia beat American Samoa 31 – 0. That’s a goal every 3 minutes!

    8. Still Not Cuddly

    10. One’s Fired

    Useful Aussie Info

    Australia has a points-based immigration system that considers factors such as; age, skills, English language competency, qualifications and financial means. There are a number of visas giving extended or permanent residence in Australia including;

    • Skilled Worker Visa
    • Employer Sponsored Visa
    • Spouse Visa
    • Business Innovation Visa
    • Permanent Residency Visa

    If you’re planning to work in Australia and already have employment, in some cases your employer may be able to assist with your visa application.

    Paperwork you may need includes;

    • Passport
    • Employment contract
    • Bank records
    • Proof of gender
    • Proof of address

    It is possible to open an Australian bank account from overseas. A number of large UK based banks operate in Australia. However, having an Australian bank account can reduce charges and avoid transaction fees. To open an Australian account you will most likely be asked for;

    • Passport
    • Visa
    • Proof of address
    • Tax information – TFN (Tax File Number)
    • Employer details & salary

    Australia has a four-stage education system;

    • Kindergarten – 4 – 5 years old
    • Primary School – 5/6 – 11
    • Secondary School – 12 – 17/18
    • Higher Education

    Most schooling is state funded. Higher education is typically split between;

    • Vocational Education Training (VET) which is often paid for by the state and government run employment schemes.
    • University, paid for through grants and student loans.

    Australian healthcare is a mix of state funded and private health insurance. In many cases employers assist with health insurance and many family healthcare plans/schemes are available to cover those fees. Many standard procedures, treatment and care is covered by the state system, however you will most likely require private healthcare provisions. This is something you should discuss with your employer if you are taking a position in the country.

    UK drivers can use a UK license in Australia for up to 3 months, after which time you will need to apply for an Australian license and may need to take a test. It’s also a legal requirement to carry your license with you when driving.

    Australians drive on the left and drive the familiar right hand-drive system. If you’re completing removals to Australia, you’ll find some roads ‘down under’ are vast, covering huge distances. Driving in the Australian Outback is a totally different experience, roads are incredibly long and roadside stops few and far between, so these trips require extra planning and extra water, fuel, etc.
