Tips For Moving Home At Christmas
The 12 Moving Tips of Christmas
On the first day of Christmas my true love said to me, “Good news, we’ve got a moving date, bad news, it’s right before Christmas…”
Don’t panic, there are a few tricks to make a yuletide move run smoother than Santa’s sleigh.
1 – Declutter
There’s no better time to declutter. That long dusty exercise bike, the fondue set that seemed a good idea in the middle of Lidl, the roller blades that were going to rekindle your youth… Don’t pay to move junk that you’ll then have to find space for in your new home. Get rid!
2 – Presents & Decorations
You’re about to move everything you own in a single day. You really don’t need to add boxes of presents and decorations to the load. Ask a friend or relative to look after all your Christmas things and pick them up once the moving day chaos is over.
3 – Get Booked
Christmas is one of the busiest times for removals companies as everybody wants to be in their new home in time for the turkey and tinsel. Get your removal team booked as early as possible to avoid extra worry.
4 – Say No-ho-ho!
It’s ok to say ‘no’ to those invites. You’re going to be busy enough with the move and shouldn’t feel guilty about having to turn down the odd get-together. Moving home is the perfect excuse to get out of some ‘do’s you really don’t want to do.
5 – Wrap Early
You’re going to have enough to do in your new home, so try and get all your presents wrapped before the move. It’ll mean one less thing to do after the relocation.
6 – Book A Shopping Delivery
Get those Christmas groceries delivered. Do an online shop prior to your move, to arrive at your new home. Just remember, deliveries will be in demand, so get your order in early.
7 – Plumbers & Trades
Plumbers are always busy at Christmas, cold weather, burst pipes, broken boilers… If you need appliances fitting or other jobs, get them booked in as early as possible.
8 – Utilities
Utility companies are also in hot demand at Christmas. Make sure you have all meter readings recorded, be prepared, ‘your call is important’ to them but you might on hold for some time.
9 – Allow Extra Time
Bad weather, flooded roads, extra traffic, the closer you get to the big day, the busier the roads will be, so allow extra journey time on move day.
10 – Festive Fun
If you’re moving with little ones, try and add some festive fun. Get that naughty elf on the shelf in on the act, Christmas themed snacks for move day, Santa hats, turn moving day into a yuletide adventure.
11 – Tell Father Christmas
Make sure Father Christmas is aware of your new address. When writing letters to the big man, tell him you’re relocating, so younger movers aren’t worried that he won’t know where to deliver their presents.
12 – Short Term Storage
If you don’t want to be completely swamped with boxes and items you haven’t found a home for yet, book a short-term storage unit to free up space until the silly season is over, giving you more room for guests and to put up those decorations.
And on behalf of all the Armishaws Team, we wish you a very merry first Christmas in your new home and a happy New Year!
